Underestimating AP Classes by Laith - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Laith Abu-Rumman, and I am currently a junior at Largo High School. I am writing to share a challenging academic experience that I faced and how I overcame it. This experience not only tested my resolve but also taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and adaptability.
During my sophomore year, I decided to take on the challenge of 4 Advanced Placement (AP) classes, AP Statistics, AP Spanish, AP US history, and AP Human geography . I was excited to push myself and learn more in my sophmore year. However, I quickly realized that the difficulty of balancing enjoyment with 4 AP classes along with being an IB student was extremely difficult
The first few weeks of the classes were overwhelming. The concepts were complex, and the pace was fast. I found myself struggling to keep up with the material, and my confidence began to waver. I had always been a good student, so feeling lost in a subject was a new and unsettling experience for me. The first major tests were approaching, and I was not prepared. I spent long hours studying, but I still did not feel confident in my understanding of the classes.
When I received my test scores, I was disappointed. I had not done as well as I had hoped, and it felt like a setback. However, I knew that I could not let this discourage me. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed in these classes. I decided to seek help and make use of the resources available to me.
I formed a study group with a few classmates. We would meet regularly to discuss the material and help each other with difficult problems. This collaborative approach was beneficial because it allowed me to see different perspectives and explanations.
In addition to seeking help from others, I also worked on improving my study habits. I created a study schedule that allowed me to review the material consistently rather than cramming before tests. I began to use online resources, such as educational videos and practice problems, to reinforce my understanding. I also made sure to take breaks and manage my time effectively to avoid burnout.
Gradually, I started to see improvements. My test scores began to rise, and I felt more confident in my abilities. The concepts that once seemed daunting started to make sense, and I was able to apply them to solve complex problems. By the end of the semester, I had not only improved my grade but also gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for these 4 extremely difficult AP classes .
This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability. I learned that it is okay to struggle and that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. I also realized the value of collaboration and how working with others can enhance learning. Most importantly, I discovered that challenges are opportunities for growth. By facing and overcoming this academic challenge, I developed skills and strategies that will help me in future endeavors.
This experience has inspired me to continue pursuing challenging courses and to embrace the learning process, even when it is difficult. As I look forward to college, I am excited about the opportunities to further explore my interests and take on new challenges. I am particularly interested in attending the University of South Florida, University of Florida, or one of the other great institutions I am considering, where I can continue to grow academically and personally.
In conclusion, the challenge of the 4 AP classes was a pivotal experience in my academic journey. It taught me resilience and the importance of seeking support and adapting my strategies. These lessons will stay with me as I continue my education and pursue my goals. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and hopeful for the future.
