First Time for Everything by Landen - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Landen Woods, and I am currently a high school junior with a passion for engineering and a strong interest in pursuing a degree in STEM fields such as Aerospace, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering. Throughout my academic journey, I have faced various challenges, but one particular experience stands out as both a test of my perseverance and an opportunity for growth.

During my sophomore year, I enrolled in an Honors Pre Calculus course, eager to dive deeper into the world of science and engineering. I knew this class would be demanding, but I was excited to learn about the principles around calculus. and how they apply to engineering. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling with the complex concepts and mathematical applications.

The first few weeks were overwhelming. I was used to grasping new material quickly, but calculus was different. Every day brought new formulas and theories that seemed to build upon one another at a dizzying pace. I remember sitting in class, feeling lost as my teacher explained the intricacies of kinematics and dynamics. My initial enthusiasm began to wane, replaced by a growing sense of frustration.

I realized that my usual study habits were not effective for this subject. In the past, I could rely on reviewing notes and completing practice problems to understand the material. However, physics required a deeper level of comprehension and the ability to apply concepts to solve complex problems. I knew I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed.

Determined to overcome this challenge, I sought help from various sources. First, I approached my physics teacher, who was incredibly supportive. I began attending extra help sessions after school, where I could ask questions and gain a better understanding of the topics we covered in class. These sessions were invaluable, as they allowed me to clarify doubts and receive personalized guidance.

Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met regularly to discuss difficult concepts, work through problems together, and share different perspectives on the material. This collaborative environment helped me see the subject from different angles and reinforced my understanding of the principles we were learning.

Outside of school, I turned to online resources and educational videos. Platforms like Khan Academy and YouTube offered explanations and examples that complemented what I was learning in class. These resources were particularly helpful because they allowed me to learn at my own pace, pausing and replaying sections as needed until I fully grasped the content.

As I dedicated more time and effort to mastering the concepts, I began to see improvement. Concepts that once seemed incomprehensible started to make sense, and my confidence grew. I learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability in the face of academic challenges. This experience taught me that it is okay to struggle and that seeking help is a crucial step in overcoming obstacles.

By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. I achieved a strong grade in the class, but more importantly, I gained a deeper appreciation for the subject. This experience solidified my interest in pursuing a career in engineering, where calculus principles play a fundamental role in problem-solving and innovation.

Reflecting on this challenging academic experience, I realize that it has prepared me for future endeavors in college and beyond. The skills I developed—resilience, collaboration, and resourcefulness—are essential for success in any field, especially in the demanding world of engineering. I am now more confident in my ability to tackle difficult subjects and more committed to pursuing my passion for STEM.

As I look forward to attending a university like the University of Central Florida, University of Florida, or Florida State University, I am excited about the opportunities to further explore engineering and contribute to advancements in technology and science. I am eager to take on new challenges, knowing that I have the tools and determination to overcome them, just as I did with calculus.
