Facing Challenges by Lashanda - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Lashanda Champion, and I am a freshman at Western Governors University, majoring in Nursing. As a first-time college student, I have faced several challenges, but one academic experience stands out as particularly difficult yet transformative.

Starting college was both exciting and intimidating. I was eager to begin my journey in nursing, a field I am deeply passionate about. However, transitioning from high school to college was not as seamless as I had hoped. The workload was heavier, the expectations were higher, and I had to learn to manage my time effectively. One class, in particular, Anatomy and Physiology, was especially challenging for me.

Anatomy and Physiology is a foundational course for nursing students, and I knew it would be demanding. I was prepared for hard work, but I underestimated just how complex the material would be. The sheer volume of information was overwhelming. I struggled to keep up with the lectures, lab work, and the extensive reading required each week. It felt like I was constantly behind, and I started to doubt my ability to succeed in the course.

The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on my first exam. I felt discouraged and worried about my future in nursing. However, I was determined not to give up. I realized that I needed to change my approach to studying. I began by reaching out to my professor for advice. She was incredibly supportive and suggested I join a study group and attend her office hours for additional help.

Joining a study group was one of the best decisions I made. It was comforting to connect with other students who were facing the same challenges. We met twice a week to review material, quiz each other, and share study tips. This collaborative environment helped me gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. I also learned how to break down complex topics into manageable parts, which made studying less overwhelming.

Time management was another area I needed to improve. I began using a planner to organize my schedule, prioritizing my tasks and setting specific goals for each study session. This structure helped me stay on track and reduced my stress levels. I also made sure to balance my academic responsibilities with self-care, recognizing the importance of maintaining my physical and mental health.

As the semester progressed, I noticed significant improvements. My grades started to reflect my hard work and determination. By the end of the course, I had not only passed but had developed a genuine interest in the subject.

Overcoming the challenges in Anatomy and Physiology taught me valuable lessons about resilience and perseverance. I am more motivated than ever to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse, knowing that I can overcome obstacles with determination and support.
