Determination Speech by Lauren - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

A well thought out speech one hears at a young age can stay with him/her throughout life. Something that is inspiring enough to make someone really see a new perspective. If I was chosen to give a speech to a school-wide audience, I would choose the topic of determination.
Determination is defined as firmness of purpose. I believe that all students struggle with determination at some point throughout their educational journeys. It can be so hard to find motivation to succeed and study hard while some peers talk about how it is all right to just be “average.” The key to success and achieving more and more is to keep the determination above the wanting to slack. Having the drive to study, complete good work, and always put one's best foot forward can be very demanding. Students lack the work ethic to achieve this drive and therefore settle into a routine of normality. Society now is pushing towards being okay with who you are and that is a great outlook, but when it comes to school, students are okay with just getting by as they are. Hardly ever do we find a majority of a class willing to always strive to “do better next time.” Determination to do so is so important and needed and will carry through school age to the rest of one’s life. That is why I think a speech about determination would be beneficial to a school-wide audience.
