In ten years by Lawrenda - June 2023 Scholarship Essay

The value of education is a lesson instilled in me since I was young. I love learning, discovering, and simply entertaining myself with new facts. School was one thing I excelled at, and I made sure to always stay on top of my classes. I noticed the impact not achieving a higher education had on my parents and made it my mission to earn a degree to help the less fortunate. I am a health, physical education, and exercise major with a concentration in health science. My long-term goal is to work as a physician assistant specializing in psychiatry. I enjoy assisting others, and my major allows me to learn new ways to do so through clinical hours and research. Instead of the typical narrow major, it is a broad stem field that allows me to gain knowledge of all the fields available in the medical field and accommodate my future patients.
I have taken classes such as psychology and health disparities, which help identify individuals and areas that need assistance. Many of my classes also help with appropriate approaches regarding sensitive topics. I aspire to foster an environment in which people can be nurtured and developed into better versions of themselves. My studies and volunteering will come in handy when it comes to interacting with patients who might not necessarily need an advocate but a listening ear. Through my work, I hope to increase awareness and give individuals hope that someone will listen to them without trying to pressure them. Every individual deserves a chance to learn how to accommodate their needs without feeling like they have failed. I plan to work for a few years in fields where I believe my education will be beneficial and later apply for a position in the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps to assist those less fortunate.

In ten years, I aspire to have developed professionally and personally to the point where I can help those who are in need, especially in underprivileged areas, whether they be physically, mentally, or financially. I want to build a practice, especially in Africa, where I grew up. In addition, I'll work with community-based fields and collaborate with organizations to create a haven for people. Medical care, especially for mental health concerns, are rare in that part of the world. Any sign of mental disease is associated with witchcraft or disregarded as a weakness of the West. This mentality has created a huge disparity and a lack of willingness to seek medical treatment. Many have continued to struggle to avoid being stigmatized, and some wound up dead. My educational background will allow me to be an effective communicator and culturally and appropriately analyze my environment to encourage safe awareness.
