Trouble in Paradise by Leshunn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my high school journey, I have faced several challenging academic experiences, but one stands out as particularly tough. It was during my junior year, in my AP Physics class. Physics was a subject that intrigued me because of its connection to Mechanical Engineering, one of the majors I am interested in pursuing at Florida A & M University. However, I quickly realized that my interest alone was not enough to get me through the complexities of the course.
The challenge began with the first few weeks of class when I struggled to grasp the fundamental concepts. The equations and theories seemed like a foreign language to me. My initial test scores were lower than I had expected, and this was a big blow to my confidence. I had always been a good student, maintaining a high GPA, so this was a new and uncomfortable experience for me.
I knew I had to find a way to overcome this obstacle, not only to maintain my GPA but also to prove to myself that I could handle difficult subjects. I started by seeking help from my teacher, who was very supportive. She provided additional resources and explained the concepts in different ways until I could understand them better. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with some classmates. We met after school a few times a week to go over the material together. This was incredibly helpful because we could learn from each other and explain things in ways that made sense to us. It also created a sense of camaraderie and mutual support, which made the learning process more enjoyable.
I also took advantage of online resources, such as educational videos and forums, where I could see different explanations and examples of the concepts we were learning in class. This helped reinforce what I was learning and allowed me to see the practical applications of physics, which made the subject more interesting and relevant to me.
As I continued to work hard and use these resources, I saw gradual improvements in my understanding and my grades. By the end of the semester, I had not only improved my test scores but also developed a genuine appreciation for physics. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and seeking help when needed. It showed me that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with determination, I can overcome obstacles.
This academic challenge also reinforced my desire to pursue Mechanical Engineering. It showed me that even though the path might be difficult, it is possible to succeed with hard work and the right support. I am excited about the possibility of studying this field at Florida A & M University, where I can continue to learn and grow.
In addition to my interest in Mechanical Engineering, I am also passionate about Management and Restaurant/Culinary/Food Services. I believe that these fields require a similar mindset of problem-solving and creativity. The skills I developed through overcoming my physics challenge, such as teamwork, time management, and critical thinking, will be invaluable as I pursue these interests.
Overall, this challenging academic experience taught me a lot about myself and what I am capable of achieving. It was a reminder that I should not be afraid of difficult subjects or situations because they are opportunities to learn and improve. I am grateful for the support I received from my teacher and classmates, and I am proud of the progress I made.
As I prepare to transition from high school to college, I carry with me the lessons I learned from this experience. I am confident that I can face future challenges with the same determination and resilience. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead at Florida A & M University and look forward to continuing my academic journey with the same passion and commitment.
