Overcoming English Challenges by Lesley - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

A challenging academic experience I faced was my struggle with communication in English during my early school years. Although I was born in the United States, I had poor communication skills, which led to my placement in English Learner classes in elementary school. This was a difficult time for me because I felt like I was falling behind my classmates. I wanted to express myself clearly and participate fully in class, but I often felt held back by my language skills.

In my heart, I knew that I needed to improve my English skills, not only to succeed academically but also to connect more meaningfully with my classmates and teachers. I was determined to overcome this challenge, and I realized that dedication and hard work were my best allies. I decided to focus on reading as much as possible. I would spend hours after school with books, immersing myself in stories and new vocabulary. This not only helped me improve my language skills but also sparked a love for reading that I carry with me to this day.

Interacting with my classmates was another key step in overcoming my communication barrier. I made a conscious effort to engage more in class discussions and group activities. At first, it was intimidating, and I often stumbled over my words. However, my classmates were supportive, and I gradually became more confident in expressing myself. This practice was invaluable because it provided real-world opportunities to use the language skills I was developing.

In the fourth grade, I had the opportunity to take an exam to determine whether I still needed to be classified as an English Learner. This was a pivotal moment for me. I felt a mix of anxiety and excitement, knowing that my hard work was about to be tested. When I passed the exam, it was a moment of immense relief and joy. I was able to transition into an intermediate-level class in the fifth grade, where I was no longer considered an English Learner. This achievement was a testament to my dedication and perseverance.

This experience taught me several important lessons that I carry with me as I prepare to enter college. First, it taught me the value of persistence. Learning a language takes time and effort, and there are no shortcuts. I learned that setting goals and working steadily towards them can lead to success. Second, it showed me the importance of seeking help and support when needed. My teachers and classmates played a crucial role in my journey, and I learned that it is okay to rely on others for guidance and encouragement.

As I look forward to pursuing a major in Teacher Education, this experience has also shaped my perspective on teaching. I understand the challenges that students with language barriers face, and I am passionate about creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. I want to be a teacher who encourages students to embrace their unique backgrounds and strengths, just as my teachers did for me.

My journey has also deepened my appreciation for diversity and the richness it brings to the classroom. As a Hispanic woman, I recognize the importance of representation in education. I am committed to being a role model for students who may feel out of place or uncertain about their abilities. I want to inspire them to believe in themselves and their potential, just as I learned to believe in my own.

In conclusion, overcoming my communication challenges in elementary school was a defining moment in my academic journey. It taught me resilience, the importance of community, and the power of education to transform lives. As I transition to college, I am eager to continue learning and growing, both as a student and as a future educator. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and excited for the opportunities ahead.
