See the world for what it is—and believe in what it could be by Lilly - May 2025 Scholarship Essay

If I had unlimited time and money, I would use everything I’ve learned—both inside the classroom and in the real world—to create a lasting impact in underserved communities, starting with places like D.C.

Since attending Howard University, I’ve learned so much beyond textbooks and lectures. Walking through the streets of D.C., I’ve seen the deep effects of gentrification—how entire neighborhoods are being reshaped in a way that pushes out the very people who’ve called them home for generations. I’ve witnessed the heartbreaking level of homelessness and the reality of people living on the streets, many battling addiction and mental health struggles without proper support. I’ve seen kids in afterschool programs be brought to parks just blocks from campus—parks that are supposed to be safe—but instead are filled with people strung out on drugs, looking like the world gave up on them. That changes you. It made me realize that healthcare doesn’t just happen in hospitals—it starts in homes, in schools, in neighborhoods.

If time and money were no object, I’d build community wellness centers in areas like these—safe, accessible spaces that provide not only medical care, but mental health services, housing support, drug rehabilitation, and youth programming. I’d create afterschool and mentorship programs that give kids a real place to feel safe and inspired. I’d hire people from the communities to help run them, creating jobs and healing through empowerment. And I’d push for policy change that prioritizes health equity and social justice.

Howard taught me to see the world for what it is—and believe in what it could be. I want to use that knowledge to be a force for good. To not just treat symptoms, but to heal systems.
