Our future by Lily - June 2025 Scholarship Essay

For this particular essay. I seemed to struggle picking between two electives, in which I personally believe would provide a different type of generational wealth for future generations to come. The first one is “Home Economics” which used to be a mandatory requirement to graduate. Now it’s a small elective where nobody takes. I believe if it was made into a required class again, students of the future would be more prepared than I was in the real world. Giving them a good head start in life and get a feel for how everything works rather than being thrown to the wolves fresh out of high school. Learning how to do things financially, learning how to cook something without using a microwave. Even going as far to say learning how to normal household chores some people seem to lack knowledge of. Since their moms do everything for them. They wouldn’t be completely lost trying to start a dryer and don’t cause an electrical fire trying to do laundry. Being independent is scary, but it doesn’t have to be with the right preparations. Home economics can be just the push some people need before going out into the real world. The other elective I was having trouble deciding between was general psychology. Which is not a very known elective either from where I’m from. If not home ec. People should have the decency to learn how other peoples minds work or how their own works. General psychology should also be considered for a required class so those who weren’t taught to how communicate properly or how to set boundaries can learn to do that before they get a rude awakening into adulthood. I may be biased though, since I’m going to study psychology in college. However you would be surprised by the sheer amount of adults who can’t communicate properly or understand boundaries. So providing the right education for that is setting up and branching new standards for the future. Our future.
