How I did my best to help change the lives of kids by Lucas - January 2017 Scholarship Essay

Over the past few years, I have been volunteering my time at a few different establishments, whether during the summer holiday, after school, or on various Saturdays. I have volunteered at soccer camps, tennis camps and Bible clubs and camps. When I used to attend Calvary Chapel St. Petersburg, I was heavily involved in the sports ministry, and in the Children’s Ministry, as part of VBS (Vacation Bible School). When I volunteered at the sports ministry, I helped instill a love of Jesus and of sports into the children attending. I coached or helped to coach sports ranging from soccer, football, baseball and basketball, to handball and kickball. Sacrificing my time to teach the children about the Bible and God, while they were enjoying themselves playing sports was a worthy investment of my time, and gave them memories and lessons that they would be hard pressed to forget. I also gave my time for 5 eventful days during the summer serving at Vacation Bible School. I was charged with 5 kids aged 8 to 12, and I led them throughout the day to the various stations set up around the church and made their experience as meaningful as possible. Every year I was inspired and motivated to return the next to keep helping these children grow in their fate and knowledge of God, so that they could venture out into the world and do good by their fellowman, having been entrenched with the proper virtues needed to become a productive and well-adjusted member of society, and the Kingdom of God.

Asides from participating with my church, I also was part of The Good News Club team at New Heights elementary school in north St. Pete. The Good News Club is an interdenominational Christian program for children in 1st through 5th grade and features a Bible lesson, songs, memory verses, and games every week. The Good News Club that I was a part of was held in the cafeteria of the school. I helped with all the components of the club listed above, and I feel as if I helped to invest long lasting knowledge of God into these kids, the same way that I did with my church. I also coached at my tennis club, The St. Pete Tennis Center. The kids looked up to me as their role model and I was glad that they could spend their time doing something active and fun, such as tennis, then being out on the streets unsupervised. It was rewarding to see the kids joy as they learned the sport of tennis. I also helped some of the kids with their homework and tutored them the best I could if they got there early for lessons. Overall I feel like I helped a great number of children in different activities and encouraged them to be better people in life.
