Struggles and rewards of school by madelyn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a high school senior with a 4.1 GPA, I have faced my fair share of academic challenges. One experience that stands out is when I encountered difficulty in my AP Calculus class during my junior year. Math has always been a subject that intrigued me, but calculus presented a complexity that was unlike anything I had previously encountered. It was a time that tested my resilience and determination, and ultimately taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of seeking help.

At the beginning of the year, I felt confident about my ability to tackle the course. However, as the weeks went by, I found myself struggling to grasp the concepts. The pace of the class was fast, and I quickly realized that my usual study methods were not enough to keep up. I started to feel overwhelmed and anxious, especially as the first major exam approached. Despite my efforts, my initial test scores did not reflect the hard work I was putting in, and I began to doubt my capabilities.

Instead of letting these feelings discourage me, I decided to take action. I knew that if I wanted to succeed, I had to change my approach. The first step I took was to communicate with my teacher. I stayed after class to discuss my struggles and ask for guidance. My teacher was incredibly supportive and provided me with additional resources, such as online tutorials and practice problems, that I could use to reinforce my understanding.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with some of my classmates. This turned out to be one of the most effective strategies for me. We met regularly to review material, work through problems together, and explain concepts to one another. This collaborative environment allowed me to see different perspectives and approaches to solving problems, which was immensely helpful. It also made studying more enjoyable and less isolating, as we were all in it together.

Another important aspect of overcoming this challenge was learning to manage my time more effectively. Balancing my calculus work with other classes and extracurricular activities required me to develop better organizational skills. I started using a planner to schedule dedicated study sessions and set specific goals for each week. This helped me stay on track and ensured that I was consistently reviewing material rather than cramming before exams.

Through these efforts, I gradually began to see improvement. My test scores increased, and I started to feel more confident in my abilities. By the end of the year, I was able to achieve a score on the AP exam that I was proud of. More importantly, I gained a deeper appreciation for the subject and the satisfaction that comes from overcoming a difficult challenge.

This experience taught me that perseverance and a willingness to seek help are key to overcoming academic obstacles. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration and time management, skills that I know will be invaluable as I pursue a degree in management at one of the universities I am interested in, such as the University of Central Florida or the University of Florida. I am excited to apply what I have learned to future challenges and continue growing both academically and personally.

In conclusion, facing difficulties in my AP Calculus class was a pivotal moment in my high school journey. It pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and develop strategies that have made me a more resilient and resourceful student. I am grateful for the support I received from my teacher and peers, and for the opportunity to learn and grow from this experience. As I look forward to college and beyond, I am confident that the skills and lessons I have gained will serve me well in achieving my academic and career goals.
