Shaping our future by Madelyn - September 2025 Scholarship Essay
The most essential foundation that every person should possess is education. Over the next 10 years, education should be more hands-on and effectively involve the students in actively participating in what they are learning. I know from experience as a high school student that I learn better when I am not seated at a desk for hours, taking notes, and listening to lectures, but instead when I am actively engaged in the lesson. Technology, in my opinion, plays a big part in it. Exams, homework, and subject-related activities are used by teachers, but they are now all done online, requiring students to open a laptop and view them. Also, computers don't help the students really think and answer with their own thoughts, and instead look up the answer with just one click.
Instead of having the same tests every week and homework every night, students should have the chance to be more engaged and construct every day. Instead of reading off a screen about science, we should be hands-on in a real experiment. History could be reenacting a historical event or building specific historical places to see the detail and time it took. Even English classes could include writing for real audiences, for example, writing letters to people, newspapers, blogs, and events.
As our world becomes more challenging and demanding, as students, we should be prepared for these demanding, hands-on projects. The upcoming generation is the future of the world; it is the older generations' role to teach us how to make this world a better and enjoyable place by starting in classrooms.
