My Passion for Agriculture and Law, Intertwined by Madison - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
Strawberries, trees, and cotton all have one thing in common, they are different types of agriculture. When you go outside you are surrounded by it. Nature makes up the environment we live in and whether you live in Africa or Canada, agriculture is an important part of daily life. Because of this, agriculture is a huge market with plenty of farmers and distributors to continue the use of agriculture in daily life.
But not everyone who is a part of that market gets treated as fairly as others. Right now in the United States, black and brown farmers are being taken advantage of by fortune 500 companies and other distributors within the market. Those who supply us with fresh goods are not being paid fairly, nor given adequate land to supply the demands of consumers. Some farmers are thriving while others are suffering. After learning of this wage gap within the farming community, I knew I wanted to do something about it .
My grandfather grew up on a farm and they were not well off. They worked long hours, ate what they could afford which was not much, and produced pounds and pounds of natural resources while getting paid pennies. They were already dealing with the problems of being black in America in the 60s but on top of that couldn’t afford basic necessities. Knowing this was my family‘s experience back then, and that this problem is still happening. Currently I felt passionate about this issue so I chose the major of agricultural business.
Next, I had to figure out what I wanted to do once I received my degree. I thought about my passions, and the things that I enjoy studying. I have always liked learning about legal studies and I wanted to incorporate that into my career after researching some more and truly learning about the law I decided that I would like to pursue a career in the agricultural field as a lawyer I want to represent those who are underrepresented and make sure that they are getting adequate and pay for the hard work that they do.
I have thought a lot about the major I want to pursue, and what I would like to do for the next chapter of my life I I am glad that I will be able to pursue my passions and positively impact those without a voice.
