My journey through highschool by Madison - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My journey through high school has been a series of ups and downs, but it has taught me a lot about resilience and determination. One of the most challenging academic experiences I have faced was during my junior year, when I struggled with my Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics class. Math has never been my strongest subject, but I knew that taking AP Statistics would be important for my future career in business administration. I wanted to challenge myself and prove that I could handle rigorous coursework.

From the beginning, I found the class to be incredibly difficult. The concepts were complex, and I often found myself lost during lectures. My grades were not what I hoped they would be, and I began to doubt my abilities. It was frustrating to put in so much effort and still feel like I was not making progress. I knew that if I wanted to succeed, I needed to find a way to overcome this challenge.

The first step I took was reaching out for help. I realized that I could not do this alone, so I started attending after-school tutoring sessions with my teacher. She was incredibly patient and helped me break down the material into more manageable parts. This extra help made a big difference, and I began to understand the concepts better. I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met regularly to review notes, work on practice problems, and support each other. It was comforting to know that I was not alone in this struggle.

In addition to seeking help from others, I had to change the way I approached studying. I started setting aside dedicated time each day to focus on statistics, even if it was just for a short period. I also made use of online resources, such as instructional videos and practice quizzes, to reinforce what I learned in class. By diversifying my study methods, I was able to retain information more effectively.

Another important aspect of overcoming this challenge was maintaining a positive mindset. It was easy to get discouraged when I did not see immediate improvements, but I reminded myself that progress takes time. I focused on small victories, like understanding a new concept or improving my score on a quiz. Celebrating these achievements kept me motivated and pushed me to keep going.

By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. I managed to raise my grade and, more importantly, gained a deeper understanding of the material. This experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth. I learned that it is okay to ask for help and that perseverance is key to overcoming obstacles.

Reflecting on this experience, I realize how much it prepared me for my future studies in business administration at the University of Arkansas. I know that college will present its own set of challenges, but I am confident in my ability to face them head-on. I have learned the importance of seeking support, adapting my study strategies, and maintaining a positive attitude. These skills will be invaluable as I pursue my degree and work towards my career goals.

As a Hispanic woman, I am proud of my heritage and the resilience that comes with it. My family has always emphasized the value of education and hard work, and I am determined to make them proud. Overcoming the challenges in my AP Statistics class has shown me that I am capable of achieving my goals, no matter how difficult they may seem.

In conclusion, the challenges I faced in my AP Statistics class taught me important lessons about perseverance, adaptability, and the power of seeking support. These lessons have not only helped me succeed academically but have also prepared me for the future challenges I will face in college and beyond. I am excited to bring this resilience and determination with me to the University of Arkansas as I pursue my dream of a career in business administration.
