A Passport to Change by Maieva - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

To get into another country you are not a citizen of, you need a passport and sometimes a visa. Obtaining these documents is not always easy for some people. In the United States, it is easier for us than for someone from a third-world country with less powerful passports and visa requirements. The process of obtaining a visa is similar to education. Our world today is constantly changing and evolving, and having an education will always help with being a part of and understanding the changes.
The process of getting an education is easier for some than for others. Take Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban in Afghanistan while trying to go to school and get an education. While in America, we have some students who are fortunate enough to attend private schools with lots of connections and state-of-the-art curriculums for their students. Everyone has different paths to education. It is how and what you use your education for that will make a difference.
The summarized google definition of a passport is an official document officializing a person’s citizenship and identity to travel under its protection to foreign countries. Then the google definition of a visa is an endorsement on a passport indicating that the holder is allowed to enter, leave, or stay for a specific period in a country. A passport could be your education, and the visa could be how you choose to use it. When you walk across the stage at graduation and receive your diploma, that's you obtain your passport. The hard part for some is choosing what to do with it. Some people know the path they want to take; for instance, some become doctors, lawyers, or teachers.
Whether you do or do not know for sure what you want to do, you'll always have your education to use. It is up to making the world a better place with it. Whether that is being a good citizen, using your knowledge to inform others, or being an activist and standing up to change.
