If you fail try again by Mailin - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As I stand on the brink of my college journey, reflecting on my high school years, I realize that one of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my junior year in AP Chemistry. The course was known for its rigor and complexity, and it was a subject that demanded not just understanding, but also the ability to apply concepts in new and often unexpected ways. This challenge was compounded by my own expectations and the pressure to maintain my GPA, which was crucial for pursuing my dream of studying Medical or Biomedical Engineering.
The first few weeks of AP Chemistry were overwhelming. I found myself struggling with the intricate details of chemical reactions and the mathematical precision required for stoichiometry. The concepts were not coming to me as easily as they had in previous science classes, and I began to doubt my abilities. Despite my best efforts, my grades on quizzes and tests were not what I had hoped for, and I felt a growing sense of frustration and anxiety.
I knew I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. Recognizing that I could not tackle this alone, I decided to seek help. I reached out to my teacher, who was incredibly supportive and willing to offer extra help. We scheduled regular sessions where I could ask questions and work through problems that I found particularly challenging. These sessions were invaluable, as they provided me with a deeper understanding of the material and boosted my confidence.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with some of my classmates. This collaborative approach allowed us to pool our knowledge and tackle difficult problems together. We met several times a week, often in the library after school, and worked through practice problems and past exams. Explaining concepts to each other and discussing different approaches to solving problems helped solidify my understanding and made the material more manageable.
I also realized the importance of developing effective study habits. I began to allocate specific times for chemistry study, breaking down the material into smaller, more digestible parts. I used a variety of resources, including online videos and textbooks, to reinforce my learning. By organizing my study sessions and focusing on one topic at a time, I was able to make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.
As I continued to work hard and stay committed to my goals, I noticed a gradual improvement in my understanding and performance. My quiz and test scores began to rise, and I started to enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems. The sense of achievement I felt when I finally grasped a difficult concept was incredibly rewarding and motivated me to keep pushing forward.
This experience taught me several important lessons. I learned the value of perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed. I discovered the power of collaboration and how working with others can enhance learning and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, I realized that challenges are opportunities for growth and that overcoming them requires determination and a willingness to adapt.
As I prepare to enter college and pursue a degree in Medical or Biomedical Engineering, I carry these lessons with me. I know that the path I have chosen will be challenging, but I am confident in my ability to overcome obstacles and succeed. The experience I had in AP Chemistry has strengthened my resolve and has shown me that I can tackle difficult subjects with the right mindset and support.
In conclusion, facing the challenge of AP Chemistry was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, seek help, and develop strategies that would lead to success. The skills and resilience I gained from this experience have prepared me well for the demands of college and the pursuit of my dream career. I am excited about the future and eager to take on new challenges, knowing that I have the tools and determination to overcome them.
