overcoming challenges by MaKenzi - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is MaKenzi Bryant, and I am a high school senior with a passion for nursing. As I look forward to attending college at either Texas Wesleyan University or Texas Woman's University, I reflect on the academic challenges I have faced and how they have shaped me. One particular experience stands out, and it taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, determination, and the power of seeking help.

During my junior year, I faced a particularly challenging time in my chemistry class. Science has always been a subject I enjoyed, but chemistry proved to be more difficult than I anticipated. The concepts were complex, and I struggled to grasp some of the foundational ideas. My grades started to slip, and I felt overwhelmed by the pressure to perform well, especially since I knew that a strong understanding of science is crucial for my future nursing career.

I remember the first time I received a test grade that was lower than I had hoped. It was disheartening, and I began to doubt my abilities. However, I knew that giving up was not an option. I was determined to improve and find a way to succeed. This experience taught me that it is okay to struggle, but it is important to take action and seek solutions.

The first step I took was to change my study habits. I realized that I needed to spend more time reviewing the material and practicing problems. I created a study schedule that allowed me to dedicate specific time each day to chemistry. This helped me to stay organized and ensured that I was consistently reviewing the material. I also started using online resources, such as educational videos and practice quizzes, to supplement my learning. These tools provided different perspectives and explanations, which helped me understand the material better.

In addition to adjusting my study habits, I also sought help from my teacher. I approached her after class and explained my struggles. She was understanding and supportive, and she offered to meet with me during lunch to go over any concepts I found difficult. These one-on-one sessions were incredibly helpful, as they allowed me to ask questions and receive immediate feedback. My teacher's encouragement boosted my confidence and motivated me to keep pushing forward. Her willingness to invest time in my success taught me the importance of building relationships with educators and seeking their guidance when needed.

Another resource that proved invaluable was my classmates. I formed a study group with a few friends who were also taking the class. We met regularly to review notes, discuss difficult concepts, and quiz each other. This collaborative approach not only made studying more enjoyable but also allowed us to learn from each other. Each of us had different strengths, and by working together, we were able to fill in the gaps in our understanding. This experience highlighted the importance of teamwork and the idea that we can achieve more when we support one another.

As I continued to put in the effort and utilize these resources, I began to see improvement in my grades. The concepts that once seemed insurmountable started to make sense, and I gained a deeper understanding of the subject. This experience taught me the importance of persistence and the value of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my belief in the power of teamwork and collaboration.

Overcoming this challenge was not easy, but it was incredibly rewarding. It showed me that I am capable of overcoming obstacles if I am willing to put in the work and seek support. This lesson is one that I will carry with me as I pursue a degree in nursing. I know that the path to becoming a nurse will have its own set of challenges, but I am confident in my ability to face them head-on.

In addition to the academic skills I gained, this experience also taught me about resilience and determination. It reminded me that setbacks are a natural part of the learning process and that they do not define my abilities. Instead, they are opportunities for growth and development. This mindset will be crucial as I enter the field of nursing, where I will need to continuously learn and adapt to new situations.

As I prepare to enter college, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. I am eager to continue learning and growing, both academically and personally. My experience in chemistry has shown me that I can overcome challenges and achieve my goals, and I am ready to take on whatever comes my way. I am particularly drawn to the nursing program because it combines my love for science with my desire to help others. I am inspired by the thought of making a difference in people's lives and providing compassionate care.

In conclusion, facing and overcoming a challenging academic experience in chemistry has been a defining moment in my high school journey. It taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, the importance of seeking help, and the power of collaboration. These lessons have prepared me for the challenges I may encounter in college and beyond, and they have strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in nursing. I am grateful for this experience and the growth it has brought me, and I am excited to apply these lessons as I move forward in my education and future career. I look forward to the journey ahead and the chance to make a positive impact in the world through nursing.
