As I sit down to reflect on my journey so far at Southeastern University, one particular academic experience stands out as both challenging and transformative. It was during my first semester as a freshman, when I was enrolled in an introductory course for Religious/Theological Studies. The course was designed to lay the groundwork for understanding various religious traditions and theological concepts, and I was excited to dive into the material. However, I soon found myself struggling with the vast amount of reading and the complex ideas we were expected to grasp.

Coming from a background where I was often one of the few students of color in advanced classes, I was used to working hard to prove myself. Yet, this course was different. The texts were dense, filled with unfamiliar terminology and historical contexts that I had never encountered before. I spent hours each night trying to make sense of the readings, but I often felt overwhelmed and frustrated. It seemed like no matter how much I read, I could not fully understand the material or contribute meaningfully to class discussions.

The turning point came when I received my first paper back. I had poured my heart into writing it, but the grade did not reflect my effort. My professor’s comments were thorough and pointed out areas where my arguments lacked clarity and depth. I felt disheartened, but I knew I could not give up. I had to find a way to overcome this challenge and succeed in the course.

I decided to seek help and make use of the resources available to me. First, I reached out to my professor during office hours. I was nervous at first, but she was incredibly supportive and took the time to walk me through the feedback on my paper. She explained where I had gone wrong and offered strategies for improvement. Her guidance helped me realize that I needed to approach the readings with a more analytical mindset, questioning the arguments and considering the broader implications of the texts.

In addition to meeting with my professor, I joined a study group with some of my classmates. This was a game-changer for me.
