As a first-generation college student and a Hispanic woman, starting my journey at Florida Southwestern State College has been both exciting and challenging. I have always been passionate about interior design, and I knew that pursuing this major would allow me to express my creativity while also developing practical skills. However, my first semester presented an unexpected academic challenge that tested my determination and resilience.

When I enrolled in my first design course, I was thrilled to dive into the world of colors, textures, and spatial planning. I imagined myself creating beautiful and functional spaces that could transform people's lives. But as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling with the technical aspects of the coursework, particularly using design software like AutoCAD and SketchUp. These tools were essential for creating detailed floor plans and 3D models, and I quickly realized that I was behind my classmates in mastering them.

The challenge was not just about learning new software; it was about overcoming the fear of not being good enough. I had always been a hands-on, creative person, but the technical side of design was intimidating. I felt overwhelmed and doubted my ability to succeed in my chosen field. It was a difficult time, and I often questioned whether I had made the right decision to pursue interior design.

Despite these doubts, I knew that giving up was not an option. I was determined to overcome this obstacle and prove to myself that I could succeed. I started by seeking help from my professors, who were incredibly supportive and understanding. They encouraged me to attend extra workshops and offered additional resources to help me practice and improve my skills. Their belief in my potential gave me the confidence to keep going.

Outside of class, I dedicated extra time to practicing on my own. I watched countless online tutorials and completed exercises to familiarize myself with the software. I also took advantage of the college's resources, such as the computer labs and library, to access the tools I needed to practice. It was a lot of work, but I was determined to catch up and excel in my studies.

Gradually, I began to see improvement. Tasks that once seemed impossible became manageable, and I started to enjoy the process of creating digital designs. I realized that the challenge I faced had taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, resourcefulness, and the power of a supportive community. I had pushed myself beyond my comfort zone and emerged stronger and more confident in my abilities.

This experience has not only strengthened my technical skills but also reinforced my passion for interior design. I have learned that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with determination and support, I can overcome any obstacle. I am proud of the progress I have made and excited about the future possibilities in my field.

As I continue my studies at Florida Southwestern State College, I am eager to build on the foundation I have established.
