My Entenmann's Essay by Marie - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

I was a college senior. My grades were pretty good, except I struggled with one course. As a major in Accounting I was required to take a course in Advanced Accounting. The instructor was a soft spoken older gentleman who was very serious and all business. I never missed a single one of his classes and I did all the homework assignments. Even though I studied for the course’s midterm exam I did not pass it. When he handed me back my test paper there was so much red ink on it, it made my head spin. I continued to go to class, to do my homework assignments and to study. The instructor gave us another exam prior to the final exam. Once again, the results were not good. I was quite frustrated. I couldn’t fault the instructor. He always answered whatever questions we had, and he made himself available after class.

One day he announced that he was going to have a special class session to help students prepare for his final exam. I knew I had to attend it even though it would be difficult for me to find a baby sitter for my son who was an infant at the time. I ended up bringing my baby with me to the special session he provided. Things were going good for a while. I was taking notes and reading through the accounting problems. About an hour into it, my son became very restless and disruptive to the class. I had to quickly gather him along with my things and leave. A woman in the class came rushing out to me. I think she felt sorry for me. She told me she would share her notes with me. I thanked her. At that moment I realized that I wasn’t the only one in the class who was in jeopardy of failing the course and not graduating.
The instructor must have realized that a high percentage of his students were not passing his course. He decided to give extra credit to anyone who wrote a paper on the financial aspects of any company. I chose Entenmann’s Bakery. I researched this company’s background and their financial statements. I did the best I could on the paper I wrote. My Dad proof read it for me. I turned the paper in and much to my delight I received an A+ on it. That was enough for me to pass the course with a grade of "C". One could not graduate with a grade of less than a "C" in one’s major so I was very grateful. I could graduate! I consider this my most proud school accomplishment because even though I ended the course with only a “C”, I had to work very hard for it and I could not have graduated without it.
