My name is Markayla Smith, and I am a high school senior with dreams of attending St. George's University, School of Medicine, to pursue a major in Pre-Med. I am writing to share a challenging academic experience that not only tested my resolve but also taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and self-belief.

During my junior year, I faced one of the toughest academic hurdles when I struggled in my AP Chemistry class. Chemistry had always intrigued me, but the advanced level of this course was unlike anything I had encountered before. The concepts were complex, and the pace was relentless. It felt like I was learning a new language, and I was not fluent yet. Despite my best efforts, my grades were not reflecting the hard work I was putting in, and it was discouraging.

I remember the first time I received a test score that was far below my expectations. It was a wake-up call that I needed to change my approach. I realized that I could not tackle this challenge alone. So, I decided to seek help. I reached out to my teacher, who was incredibly supportive and willing to offer extra help during lunch breaks and after school. These sessions were invaluable as they allowed me to ask questions and understand the material at my own pace.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met twice a week to review notes, work on practice problems, and quiz each other. This collaborative effort made a significant difference. It was reassuring to know that I was not the only one finding the course difficult, and together, we were able to support each other and share different perspectives on the material.

Another strategy that helped me overcome this academic challenge was changing the way I studied. I started using online resources, like educational videos and interactive quizzes, to reinforce what I learned in class. These tools provided visual and practical examples that helped me grasp difficult concepts more effectively. I also began to make detailed study guides and flashcards, which were crucial for retaining information.

Throughout this experience, I learned the importance of time management and organization. Balancing my AP Chemistry workload with other classes and extracurricular activities required me to plan my days carefully. I set specific goals for each study session and prioritized my tasks to ensure I was making the most of my time. This discipline not only improved my performance in chemistry but also in my other subjects.

Despite the initial setbacks, my hard work and determination paid off. By the end of the semester, my grades improved significantly, and I gained a newfound confidence in my ability to tackle challenging material. More than just a grade, I had developed skills that would serve me well in college and beyond—skills like resilience, collaboration, and critical thinking.

This experience was a turning point for me. It reinforced my passion for science and my desire to pursue a career in medicine. I realized that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to grow and learn. They push us to step out of our comfort zones and discover what we are truly capable of achieving.

As I look forward to the next chapter of my academic journey at St. George's University, I carry with me the lessons I learned from my AP Chemistry class.
