My history challenge by Matthew - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
During my junior year of high school, I faced a challenging academic experience that taught me a lot about perseverance and resourcefulness. It was in my AP U.S. History class, a course known for its rigorous workload and demanding exams. I had always been interested in history, so I was excited to dive into the material. However, I quickly realized that the class required a level of critical thinking and analysis that I had not fully developed yet.
The first few weeks were overwhelming. The amount of reading and the depth of understanding required felt like a mountain I was not prepared to climb. I struggled with the essays, in particular. They required me to not only know the facts but to interpret them and form coherent arguments. My first essay came back with a grade that was much lower than I had hoped for, and it was a wake-up call. I knew I had to change my approach if I wanted to succeed.
The turning point came when I decided to seek help. I realized that I could not do it alone, so I started attending after-school tutoring sessions offered by my teacher. These sessions were incredibly helpful, as they provided me with one-on-one guidance and allowed me to ask questions about things I did not understand in class. My teacher helped me break down the essay prompts and taught me how to structure my arguments more effectively.
In addition to tutoring, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met once a week to discuss the material, quiz each other, and share notes. This collaboration was invaluable because it gave me different perspectives on the material and helped me see connections I had not noticed before. We supported each other and held each other accountable, which motivated me to stay on top of the workload.
I also made a conscious effort to improve my time management skills. I started using a planner to organize my assignments and set aside specific times each day for studying. By breaking down the work into smaller, manageable tasks, I was able to avoid the last-minute cramming that had been a problem in the past. This not only reduced my stress but also improved the quality of my work.
The most important lesson I learned from this experience was the value of persistence. There were times when I felt like giving up, but I reminded myself why I was taking the class in the first place. My interest in history and my desire to challenge myself academically kept me going. Over time, my hard work paid off. My grades improved, and I gained confidence in my ability to tackle difficult subjects.
This experience taught me that challenges can be opportunities for growth. By seeking help, collaborating with others, and managing my time effectively, I was able to overcome my initial struggles. I learned that it is okay to ask for help and that working with others can lead to better outcomes than working alone. These lessons will be invaluable as I move on to college, where I plan to study Business Administration or Journalism.
I am particularly interested in attending a university like Arizona State University or the University of Colorado Boulder, where I can continue to develop these skills in a supportive environment. I believe that the challenges I have faced in high school have prepared me for the academic rigors of college, and I am excited to take on new challenges in the future.
In conclusion, my experience in AP U.S. History was a challenging but rewarding one. It taught me about the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and effective time management. These are skills that I will carry with me as I pursue my college education and beyond. I am grateful for the opportunity to have faced this challenge, as it has made me a stronger and more resilient student.
