My chemistry challenges by McKenzie - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As I sit down to write about a challenging academic experience, I am reminded of the time when I struggled in my chemistry class during my junior year of high school. It was a pivotal moment that taught me a lot about perseverance and asking for help when needed.
Chemistry was a subject that I had always found intriguing. The idea of understanding the building blocks of our world seemed fascinating. However, when I started the class, I quickly realized that the reality was different from my expectations. The concepts were complex, and the pace of the class was fast. Balancing chemical equations and understanding molecular structures felt like deciphering a foreign language to me.
My initial strategy was to spend more time studying on my own, hoping that sheer determination would help me grasp the material. I would stay up late at night, pouring over my textbook and class notes, but the more I tried, the more overwhelmed I felt. My grades began to slip, and I started to doubt my abilities. It was disheartening, especially since I had always been a diligent student.
The turning point came when I received a particularly low score on a midterm exam. I knew I could not continue on the same path and expect different results. I needed a new approach. It was then that I decided to reach out for help. It was not easy for me to admit that I was struggling, but I realized that asking for assistance was not a sign of weakness. It was a step towards growth.
I approached my chemistry teacher after class and explained my struggles. To my relief, she was incredibly supportive and understanding. As I look forward to attending Salisbury University, I know that there will be new challenges ahead, especially as I pursue studies in healthcare-related fields like Respiratory Care, Mental Health, and Nursing. These areas require a strong understanding of complex concepts and a dedication to helping others. My experience with chemistry has prepared me to tackle these challenges with resilience and an open mind.
