My journey of resilience and commitment by Mekhi - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Success hasn’t come easily for me; it’s been a journey shaped by both resilience and
commitment. One of the most significant hardships I’ve faced was learning to overcome my
tendency toward procrastination and my struggle to establish consistent study habits. At first,
these challenges seemed like minor setbacks, but over time, they took a toll on my academic
performance and left me feeling uncertain about my future. I often pushed off assignments until
the last moment, especially smaller tasks that I underestimated. However, realizing how much
this habit held me back was the turning point I needed. I began working to build better habits,
experimenting with study techniques, daily schedules, and goal-setting strategies that would keep
me accountable. Gradually, I found a routine that worked, and I’ve since been able to focus more
intently, which has led to noticeable academic improvement. This experience taught me that
growth is a daily effort—one built on small but consistent steps forward.
As a Media Journalism and Film major at Howard University, I am pursuing my dream of
becoming a professional play-by-play sports broadcaster. This path not only requires a solid
foundation in journalism and storytelling but also demands resilience in a field that is highly
competitive. Through my studies, I’m gaining the skills I need to excel in broadcasting, from
technical production to narrative techniques. But beyond the classroom, I’m also building my
professional experience by taking on internships, on-campus broadcasting roles, and networking
with industry professionals. These steps are all part of my commitment to becoming a trusted
voice in sports, someone who not only calls games but brings the excitement of every moment to
fans everywhere.
My journey has also been shaped by my involvement in the National Society of Leadership and
Success (NSLS). Through NSLS, I had the privilege of hearing from Deion Sanders, who shared
insights on resilience and setting one’s “thermostat” maintaining control over one’s outlook and
approach to life each day. His words resonated deeply with me, inspiring me to establish a daily
routine of reflection and positive goal setting. This practice has made a profound difference,
allowing me to face challenges with a clear head and determined spirit. In addition, I’ve shared
this practice with my friends and peers, encouraging them to approach each day with purpose.
These experiences have shown me the power of community, where we uplift and support one
another, especially when times are tough.
Looking ahead, my education path is the foundation for a stable and fulfilling future. It equips
me with the skills and confidence I need to succeed as a broadcaster, but it also shapes me into
someone capable of making a meaningful impact in others’ lives. I am determined to use my
voice to tell stories that inspire and connect people, reminding them of the resilience and passion
we all hold within us. With every step I take, I’m working toward a future that’s not only
successful for me but also meaningful for the people I hope to reach through my work.
