Consuming Your Health by Melissa - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

Health is an important topic that is currently being focused on around the world. Students these days occupy themselves with schoolwork and by socializing, yet they never stop to look at the food they are consuming. If I had the ability to add a new subject to the American high school curriculum, I’d establish a healthy foods course for students to participate in. With this curriculum, students can begin to prepare for the future and search for a healthier lifestyle.

Presently, high school students participate in one year of health class that focuses on different ranges of wellness. Little time is spent on teaching students how eating healthy is important and why eating fresh foods can make a difference in comparison to junk food. In addition, obesity is a rising problem in America and an efficient way to conquer this obstacle is by raising awareness and by teaching people how they can improve their eating habits.

The new curriculum would provide students with steps towards a healthier lifestyle. The first step would be to eradicate fast foods from their lives. The next step would be to provide them with recipes to enact at home. This course could go hands on and allow students to perform these recipes during class time. Therefore, they have the opportunity to implement what they’ve learned at home. In addition, foods can be viewed in a scientific light by dissecting what each meal consists of.

Ultimately, this course could improve the future of a multitude of individuals who are looking for a healthier outcome. Healthy eating stimulates the brain to excel in learning, helps the body feel exceptional, and provides an enhanced lifestyle. With the implication of this course, obstacles can be diminished and students will have had a lesson that will follow them throughout their lives.
