Florida by Mercedes - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
An abundance of people are naturally born with good skills within a specific subject but in my case that wasn't the situation. For sometime I struggled with mathematics just as much as I did with reading. As much as I tried, I knew there was always something missing that needed to be done in order for me to get better on what I believe were my weaknesses. I remember tenth grade as if I was living it till this day. My tenth grade English II teacher loves teaching, never missed a day, and enjoys reading. She would purchase thousands of books just to see her student's read and pass the reading FSA.
The previous year I had intensive reading and I wanted it to be different for me once I pass the reading FSA being an incoming Junior at the time. It was tough because almost every year I failed my reading exams but I was determined I will be passing. My teacher encouraged me to read. I read two books a month for a whole year. I was motivated, determined, and focused. As the month went by and the year flew, I enjoyed reading books. I wouldn't do it just because I had to but because I wanted to. As I was reading I was learning. Not even knowing, my vocabulary words were increasing and so was my knowledge of understanding bigger words and longer passages.
Slowly and surely I was becoming the student I dreamed of being one day. Reading may sound boring to some people but a lot of the times one must be able to try new things to learn from them. Through reading I found my strength when someday it was my weakness. During the summer of 2015 my English II teacher received the scores. After all the reading I have done and tests I have taken and improved in, I passed my reading FSA as well as the writing portion. As a student this helped me grow by getting to know my weaknesses and using special methods for me to succeed in them. One can fail as many times till they learn to change their ways around. Passing the FSA has been something I have been proud of ever since. Many are struggling to pass it and it is because they don't read. Reading is the key to passing just about any English exam.
