Leadership qualities and college by Michael - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Many high school seniors have gained valuable leadership skills in high school. As a high school student I also gained these skills. At the time, I only believed they would help me be admitted to my dream college. For many students, leadership skills are a mere resume booster, but they are far from the right answer. Leadership skills are essential to college success.
Leadership skills will help a student in college both in and out of the classroom. Many courses in college have a component of group work. This work may be accomplished through projects, group papers, and other assignments. If a student does not have leadership skills, he will be left behind in this work. One of the most problematic situations is if the group has no motivation-which is common in the college setting-to accomplish a task. A student needs to be able to lead his team to be able to succeed. Leaders are also needed in extracurricular activities in college. College students need a break from the seemingly endless work and extracurricular activities provide that outlet. Unlike clubs in high school where moderators and teachers run the activities, students run the extracurricular activities in college. In order for the club to be successful, student leaders need to be present to plan all activities of the club. Without student leaders, extracurricular activities in college would be poorly maintained and ultimately fail.
Another reason why leadership skills are important is because they prepare you for the real world. College is a stepping stone from a life of education to the work force. Students attend college to better themselves for the future and to be productive members of society. College is where students can excel to become leaders in the workforce. Likewise, students need to learn leadership skills so they will be productive outside of school. Leadership is not taught in college. The college simply strengthens the leadership qualities that the students already have.
Leadership skills are essential to college success. Students need to gain these skills before they enter college and enhance those skills while in college. Without proper leadership skills, students will fail inside and outside of the classroom. Students will also not be able to function as the workers they intend to be without the qualities of a leader.
