Challenges that I face! by Mir Afnan Sarwar - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Mir Afnan Sarwar Abro, and I am currently a freshman at Florida International University, pursuing a major in Economics. As a first-time college student, I have encountered several challenges, but one academic experience stands out as particularly challenging and transformative.

During my first semester, I enrolled in an introductory Economics course. Excited about diving into my major, I was eager to learn and excel. However, I soon realized that the transition from high school to college-level coursework was more difficult than I had anticipated. The pace was faster, the material more complex, and the expectations far higher. The course required a deep understanding of economic theories and the ability to apply them to real-world situations, which was a significant leap from the more straightforward memorization techniques I was used to in high school.

The first few weeks were overwhelming. I struggled to keep up with the lectures and assignments. The concepts of supply and demand, elasticity, and market equilibrium were intriguing yet challenging to grasp fully. I found myself spending long hours in the library, trying to comprehend the textbook and lecture notes. Despite my efforts, my performance in the first midterm was disappointing. I felt discouraged and began to doubt my ability to succeed in my chosen field.

Realizing that I needed to change my approach, I decided to seek help. I reached out to my professor during office hours, hoping to gain a better understanding of the material. This was a humbling experience, as I had always been a student who prided himself on being self-reliant. However, my professor was incredibly supportive and provided me with additional resources and guidance on how to tackle the subject matter. He encouraged me to view economics not just as a series of graphs and equations, but as a way of thinking about the world.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I joined a study group with some of my classmates. This was another step outside my comfort zone, as I had always preferred studying alone. However, collaborating with others allowed me to see different perspectives and approaches to solving problems. We would meet weekly to discuss and review the material, quiz each other, and work through challenging problems together. This collective effort not only improved my understanding but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.

I also made use of online resources, such as educational videos and forums, which provided alternative explanations and examples that complemented my coursework. These resources helped reinforce my learning and filled in the gaps in my understanding.

Through these efforts, I gradually began to improve. I learned to manage my time more effectively, balancing my coursework with other responsibilities. I developed better study habits, focusing on understanding the underlying principles rather than rote memorization. My grades started to reflect my hard work and determination, and I regained my confidence.

The experience taught me the importance of adaptability and resilience. It showed me that it is okay to seek help and that collaboration can lead to greater understanding and success. I learned that challenges are opportunities for growth and that perseverance is key to overcoming obstacles.

This challenging academic experience was a turning point in my college journey. It not only strengthened my commitment to my major but also prepared me for future challenges. I now approach my studies with a more open and proactive mindset, ready to tackle whatever comes my way.

As I continue my education in Economics at Florida International University, I am grateful for the lessons I have learned. They have shaped me into a more resilient and resourceful student, better equipped to face the complexities of my field. This experience has reaffirmed my passion for Economics and my desire to understand and contribute to the world around me.

In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge has been a pivotal moment in my college experience. It has taught me the value of seeking help, the power of collaboration, and the importance of perseverance. These lessons will undoubtedly guide me as I pursue my academic and career goals, and I am thankful for the opportunity to grow and learn from this experience.
