Education Is Power by Miya - September 2025 Scholarship Essay
Education holds a lot of power, and this is especially important for minority populations like African Americans. Throughout American history–and still present today–African Americans have been denied proper education. This disheartens me that many African American youth are barely graduating high school. Moreover, it is hard for youth with financial struggles to attend college or secondary education because college is costly, and current changes in laws are taking away many grants, loans, and scholarships. As I also struggle to make ends meet to pay for my education, I hope that over the next 10 years, education will be fairer, equitable, and accessible to all.
As someone who loves to give back to her community, I tutor middle schoolers in math. I can also see the impact in that I help these students because they are more excited to learn from a college student rather than their teachers. With that, teachers play an important role in education as well. However, they can be overworked and underpaid, which causes a lot of dilemmas, leading to improper education. If we could appreciate and respect these teachers more, everyone would have a better experience and get a better education. Overall, education is very important, and I hope everyone gets a proper education and can pursue their dreams. I hope education in the next 10 years not only educates students but also uplifts them with confidence and gives them the ability to pursue their brightest dreams.
