My name is Montana Freeman, and I am a freshman at the College of Southern Idaho, currently majoring in Business Administration. Like many students, I have faced my share of academic challenges, but one experience stands out as particularly formative. It taught me not only about the subjects I was studying but also about perseverance, resourcefulness, and the importance of seeking help when needed.
During my first semester, I enrolled in an accounting class, which I thought would be straightforward. I had always been good with numbers, so I assumed that accounting would come naturally to me. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling to grasp the concepts and keep up with the pace of the class. The lectures seemed overwhelming, and the textbook felt like it was written in another language. I was falling behind, and my confidence was starting to waver.
I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step was acknowledging that I was struggling and that it was okay to ask for help. I reached out to my professor and explained my situation. She was understanding and suggested that I attend her office hours for additional support. This was a turning point for me. During these sessions, she broke down complex concepts into simpler terms and provided practical examples that made the material more relatable. Her willingness to help and her patience gave me the encouragement I needed to keep going.
In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to review the material, discuss challenging topics, and work through practice problems together. This collaborative approach was incredibly beneficial. Not only did it provide me with different perspectives on the material, but it also created a supportive environment where we could learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses. We motivated each other to stay on track and held each other accountable for our progress.
Furthermore, I began utilizing additional resources outside of class. I found online tutorials and videos that explained accounting principles in a way that was easier for me to understand. These resources allowed me to learn at my own pace and revisit topics as needed. I also made use of the college's tutoring center, where I received one-on-one assistance from tutors who were knowledgeable and approachable.
Another important aspect of overcoming this challenge was improving my time management skills. Balancing coursework, study sessions, and personal commitments was difficult, but I learned to prioritize my tasks and set realistic goals for each day. I created a study schedule that allowed me to allocate dedicated time for accounting, ensuring that I stayed consistent in my efforts. This discipline not only helped me catch up but also reduced my stress levels significantly.
As the semester progressed, I began to see improvements in my understanding of accounting. My grades on assignments and exams started to reflect the hard work I was putting in. By the end of the course, I had not only passed but also developed a genuine interest in the subject. This experience taught me that with determination, the right support system, and effective study strategies, I could overcome academic challenges that initially seemed insurmountable.
Reflecting on this journey, I am grateful for the lessons I learned along the way. It taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and resourcefulness. These skills will undoubtedly serve me well in my future studies and career in business administration.
This experience has also inspired me to help others who may be struggling academically. I have since volunteered as a peer tutor at the college, hoping to provide the same support and encouragement that I received during my challenging time. I want to be a resource for others, showing them that they are not alone in their struggles and that with the right strategies, they too can overcome their academic challenges.
In conclusion, the academic challenge I faced in my accounting class was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It pushed me to grow, adapt, and develop skills that will benefit me throughout my life. I am proud of how I overcame this challenge, and I am excited to continue my studies with a newfound confidence in my abilities.
