Engineering Perseverance: Overcoming Challenges Through Leadership and Teamwork by Morgan - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my junior year when I was tasked with organizing and leading a project for my engineering class. The project involved designing and building a functional marble launcher, a task that required both technical skills and effective collaboration within a team. While I was excited about the challenge, I quickly realized that coordinating a team of individuals with diverse ideas and approaches was far more complicated than I had anticipated.
The first major obstacle was communication. Everyone had their own vision for the project, and our initial meetings often ended in disagreements without a clear plan. As the team leader, it was my responsibility to ensure we stayed on track, but I felt overwhelmed trying to balance everyone’s input. On top of that, I struggled with some of the technical aspects of the design, which made me doubt my ability to lead effectively.
To overcome these challenges, I decided to break the problem into manageable steps. First, I scheduled a meeting where each team member presented their ideas. We then voted on the most feasible elements to incorporate into our final design. This process allowed everyone to feel heard while ensuring we moved forward with a cohesive plan.
Second, I dedicated extra time outside of class to studying the mechanics of marble launchers. I consulted online resources, reached out to my teacher for guidance, and even practiced building prototypes at home. Gaining a deeper understanding of the technical aspects not only boosted my confidence but also enabled me to assist my team more effectively.
Finally, I implemented a clear timeline with specific deadlines for each phase of the project. This structure kept us organized and ensured that everyone contributed equally. As the weeks went by, our team became more cohesive, and our marble launcher gradually took shape.
By the end of the project, we not only built a successful launcher but also earned one of the highest grades in the class. More importantly, I learned valuable lessons about leadership, teamwork, and perseverance. This experience taught me that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be overcome with determination, effective communication, and a willingness to learn.
