Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote a classic novel titled “The Secret Garden”, a work of art that has captivated the minds of readers for generations. Originally published in 1911, this intriguing novel was written by a grieving mother who persevered through a sorrowful time to mirror her trauma into a story where one could feel as if they had an opportunity to connect to the departed. This book takes us on a journey to a secluded yet magical garden, where the stunning power of nature and self-discovery transforms to accommodate the lives of the protagonists. My encounter with this novel began during my early middle school years and left a profound impact on the attitude I take towards pursuing my goals. This novel taught me a valuable mindset that I maintain on the outlook of my future which has inspired me to embrace my individuality and dreams, even in the face of parental objections.

"The Secret Garden" is centered in England and follows the life of Mary Lennox, a spoiled orphan who was sent to live with her withdrawn uncle, Archibald Craven, after the death of her parents in India. At Craven’s lavish estate named Misselthwaite Manor, Mary goes against her Uncle's wishes by exploring parts of the house she was forbidden from seeing and discovers her bedridden cousin, Colin. She eventually stumbles upon a hidden, neglected garden within the grounds where she befriends a lost dog called Dickon and makes it her goal to bring the garden back to life. In doing so, the relationship between Colin and his grieving father is repaired when seeing the memories that their departed loved ones shared in the garden.

The novel beautifully portrays the transformation of not only the garden but also the characters. It reveals the power of nature and the human conscience's ability to heal and grow from the trauma it endured. Burnett's vivid descriptions of the garden and the characters' personal growth make it an inspiring adventure for readers of all ages. Reading "The Secret Garden" at a young age reflected heavily on my perspective and outlook on my personal life changes. At that age, I was still trying to navigate the school atmosphere while growing up and finding my own identity. The main character of Mary Lennox, who starts as a lonely and spoiled child resonated with me because I related to the lonely feeling she had which reflected upon the attitude I carried at the time. The way she eventually found the joys of friendship through the healing of the garden connected with how I warmed up to my peers by coming out of my comfort zone.

One of the most significant lessons I took from this book would be the idea that it is essential to pursue one's passions, even if it means going against the fears or doubts of one's guardians. In the story, Mary is determined to restore the secret garden to a similar haven that her mother and Ms.Craven once experienced. However Mr. Craven, her newfound guardian, is against the idea due to his own fears of reliving painful memories of his late wife. Mary's determination, curiosity, and resilience not only led to the rejuvenation of the sacred space, but of her own life. This taught me that sometimes, the most important journeys we take are the ones where an individual recognizes their personal growth, even if they require us to defy the expectations and fears imposed by others.

In conclusion, "The Secret Garden" is a classic literary piece that offers readers a perspective. This novel instilled this belief that one should not be constrained by the worries or limitations of parents with good intentions. It encouraged me to explore my own passions and embrace my own character to the people around me. I was inspired to work harder than ever to achieve my desires. The story's theme of rejuvenation and self-discovery will remain with me as I navigate through life, continuing to guide me as I make choices about my education and future. I would encourage others to find solace in the pages of this book and the message it leaves its audience enthralled.
