Days in high school by Myla - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Myla Booker, and I am a junior in high school with the dreams of attending Texas Woman's University to study nursing. I am excited about the future, but my journey has not always been easy. One of the most challenging academic experiences I have faced happened during my sophomore year, and it taught me a lot about resilience and determination.
During my sophomore year, I struggled with chemistry. Science has always been a subject I am interested in, especially because I want to pursue nursing. However, chemistry was different. The concepts were complex, and I found it hard to keep up with the pace of the class. My grades in the first semester reflected this struggle, and I felt discouraged. My GPA was not where I wanted it to be, and I knew I needed to make a change if I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse.
At first, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. I knew I needed help, but I was hesitant to ask for it. I worried about what my classmates might think and feared that asking for help meant admitting failure. However, I realized that I could not overcome this challenge alone. I decided to reach out to my teacher and ask for extra help. This was a big step for me, as I had to put aside my pride and accept that I needed assistance.
My chemistry teacher was incredibly supportive. She took the time to explain the concepts I struggled with and gave me additional practice problems to work on. I also started attending after-school tutoring sessions, where I could ask questions and get help from other students who understood the material better. This experience taught me the importance of seeking help and using the resources available to me.
In addition to getting help from my teacher and attending tutoring sessions, I also changed the way I approached studying. I realized that my study habits needed improvement, so I began to dedicate more time to reviewing my notes and practicing problems every day. I created a study schedule to keep myself on track and made sure to stick to it. This helped me stay organized and ensured that I was consistently putting in the effort needed to improve my understanding of the material.
Another important lesson I learned was the value of perseverance. There were times when I felt like giving up, especially when my grades did not improve as quickly as I hoped. However, I reminded myself of my goals and kept pushing forward. I knew that becoming a nurse was my dream, and I was determined not to let this obstacle stand in my way. By staying focused and committed, I was able to slowly but surely improve my grades in chemistry.
By the end of the year, I had made significant progress. My grades improved, and I gained a deeper understanding of the subject. More importantly, I learned that challenges are a part of life, and overcoming them requires hard work, determination, and the willingness to ask for help when needed. This experience not only helped me academically but also prepared me for future challenges I may face in college and beyond.
Looking back, I am grateful for the struggle I went through with chemistry. It taught me valuable lessons that I will carry with me as I pursue my nursing degree at Texas Woman's University. I know that the road ahead will have its own set of challenges, but I am confident in my ability to overcome them. I am determined to make a difference in the world through nursing, and I am ready to face whatever obstacles come my way.
In conclusion, facing difficulties in chemistry was a turning point for me. It pushed me to grow and develop skills that will serve me well in my future studies and career.
