Arizona State University
Business Administration Major
As a first-time college freshman at Arizona State University, I have encountered some academic challenges, but each one has been a chance to grow and learn. Being a Black woman pursuing a major in Business Administration, I feel a strong sense of pride and responsibility to succeed, not just for myself but for my community. My journey has been filled with learning experiences that have shaped my resilience and determination.
One of the most challenging experiences I faced was during my first semester in a Business Statistics course. Numbers have never been my favorite, and the fast-paced nature of the class made it even more intimidating. After the first exam, I was disappointed with my performance and started to question my abilities. It was a tough moment, but I knew I could not give up. I had to find a way to turn things around. This challenge was not just about passing a class; it was about proving to myself that I belonged in this field and could excel.
I decided to take control of the situation by reaching out for help. Visiting my professor during office hours was the first step. I was nervous, but my professor was supportive and provided me with resources like tutoring sessions and study groups. This experience taught me that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. It was reassuring to know that there were people who wanted to see me succeed and were willing to help me get there.
Forming study groups with my classmates also made a big difference. Working together allowed us to share ideas and learn from each other. It turned studying into a more enjoyable and less stressful experience. We would meet regularly, and each session brought me closer to understanding the material. The group became a source of motivation and encouragement, and we celebrated each other's progress, which made the journey more rewarding.
Online resources became another key part of my strategy. I found educational videos and practice problems that helped me break down complex topics. With these tools, I could study at my own pace and reinforce what I learned in class. The flexibility of online resources allowed me to revisit challenging concepts as needed, ensuring that I fully grasped the material before moving on.
Time management was crucial too. Balancing my coursework with other responsibilities was challenging, but I learned to prioritize. I created a study schedule that ensured I dedicated enough time to statistics without neglecting my other classes. This discipline not only helped me manage my current workload but also taught me valuable skills that I can apply throughout my academic and professional life.
As the semester went on, I started to see positive changes. My grades improved, and I felt more confident in my abilities. By the time the final exam came around, I was ready and determined to do my best. The hard work paid off, and I achieved a grade that I was proud of. This success was not just a reflection of my efforts but also of the support system I had built around me.
This experience taught me about resilience and the power of perseverance. Challenges are opportunities for growth, and with determination and the right support, I can overcome any obstacle. It also strengthened my passion for business administration, as I realized the skills I was developing would be essential in my future career. I learned that facing difficulties head-on and working through them is what truly prepares us for the real world.
Being a Black woman in a predominantly white institution can sometimes feel isolating, but it also motivates me to excel and inspire others. I am hopeful about the future and excited to continue my education, knowing that I can make a positive impact in the business world. I want to use my experiences to encourage others who may feel like outsiders in their environments to keep pushing forward.
In conclusion, facing academic challenges is a part of the college experience, but it is how we respond to these challenges that defines us. My journey through Business Statistics at ASU was a test of my determination and willingness to adapt. By seeking help, working with peers, and managing my time effectively, I overcame my struggles and emerged stronger. This experience has prepared me for future challenges and instilled in me a confidence and hope that I will carry throughout my academic and professional career. I am ready to face whatever comes next, knowing that I have the tools and resilience to succeed.
