Progression by Narel - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Narel Castanos, and I am a high school senior excited about the future and eager to pursue a major in Accounting at Baruch College . Reflecting on a challenging academic experience, I realize how it has prepared me for the journey ahead and filled me with hope.
In my junior year, I encountered a tough hurdle in my Algebra II class. Math had always intrigued me, but this course was more demanding than I had expected. The concepts were abstract, and the pace was swift. As I watched my grades drop, I felt the weight of the challenge, but I was determined not to let it hold me back.
The first few tests were eye-opening. I knew I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. With a hopeful mindset, I decided to reach out to my teacher for guidance. I shared my struggles and asked for advice. My teacher was incredibly supportive and suggested I attend extra help sessions after school.
I began attending these sessions twice a week. Initially, it was daunting to admit I needed help, but I quickly realized I was not alone. Many of my classmates were facing similar challenges. In this smaller setting, I could ask questions freely and gain a deeper understanding of the material. My teacher's patience and willingness to explain concepts in different ways made all the difference. These sessions became a beacon of hope for me.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to review notes, tackle homework problems, and prepare for tests. This collaborative environment turned learning into a hopeful and enjoyable experience. We encouraged each other and celebrated our progress together. I learned the power of teamwork and how different perspectives can lead to better solutions.
To further reinforce my understanding, I explored online resources. Educational videos and tutorials broke down complex topics into manageable parts. I spent time watching these videos and practicing problems on my own. This extra practice helped solidify my knowledge and boosted my confidence.
Throughout this journey, I discovered the importance of perseverance and adaptability. I learned that it is okay to struggle and ask for help. In fact, seeking assistance is a sign of strength. By facing my challenges head-on, I developed resilience and a growth mindset. I understood that setbacks are part of the learning process and that with effort and determination, I could overcome them.
By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. My grades improved significantly, and I felt more confident in my abilities. This experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth and that I am capable of overcoming obstacles with the right mindset and strategies.
Looking ahead to my college journey at Baruch , I am filled with hope and excitement. I am ready to apply the lessons I learned from this experience to tackle new challenges. My goal is to excel in my Accounting major and seize the opportunities that come my way.
As a Hispanic student, I am proud of my heritage and the values it has instilled in me. My family has always emphasized the importance of education and hard work. They have supported me every step of the way, and I am motivated to succeed not only for myself but also for them.
In conclusion, the challenging academic experience I faced in Algebra II was a pivotal moment in my life. It taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, collaboration, and the power of seeking help. These lessons have prepared me for the future and will guide me as I pursue my dreams at UConn. I am hopeful for what lies ahead and grateful for the opportunity to share my story. Thank you for considering my application for this scholarship.
