As a freshman at ivytech, I have already encountered my fair share of academic challenges. One experience that stands out happened during my first semester, when I was taking an introductory course in computer programming. Coming from high school with a GPA of 2.5, I knew college would be a different ball game, but I was not fully prepared for the level of difficulty I faced.

In high school, I had developed a basic understanding of computers and programming, but the college course was much more intense. The pace was fast, the topics were complex, and I quickly realized that my foundational knowledge was not as strong as I had thought. The first few weeks were overwhelming, and I struggled to keep up with the coursework. The concepts of algorithms, data structures, and syntax were foreign to me, and I felt like I was drowning in a sea of unfamiliar information.

The first major challenge came with our midterm project, which required us to build a small application. I remember staring at my computer screen for hours, trying to make sense of the code. It was frustrating to feel so lost, and I started to doubt my abilities. I knew I needed to find a way to overcome this obstacle, or I risked falling behind in my studies.

The first step I took was to seek help. I swallowed my pride and reached out to my professor during office hours. This was not easy for me, as I had always been a bit shy about asking for help, but I knew it was necessary. My professor was understanding and patient, taking the time to explain the concepts I was struggling with. He also recommended additional resources, such as online tutorials and coding practice websites, which proved to be invaluable.

I also formed a study group with a few classmates. This was a game-changer because it allowed us to collaborate and learn from each other. We would meet several times a week to go over lecture notes, discuss assignments, and work through problems together. This not only helped me grasp the material better but also gave me a sense of camaraderie and support. Knowing that I was not alone in my struggles made a big difference in my confidence.

Another strategy I adopted was to manage my time more effectively. In high school, I could get away with last-minute cramming, but I quickly learned that this approach would not work in college. I started using a planner to schedule my study sessions and set specific goals for each session. Breaking down the workload into manageable chunks made it less daunting and more achievable. I also made sure to balance my studies with breaks to avoid burnout.

As the semester progressed, I noticed a gradual improvement in my understanding and performance. The concepts that once seemed impossible to grasp started to make sense, and I became more comfortable with programming. By the time the final project came around, I was able to approach it with a newfound confidence and a clearer plan.

Reflecting on this experience, I realize that overcoming this academic challenge taught me several valuable lessons. I learned the importance of seeking help and not being afraid to admit when I am struggling. I discovered the power of collaboration and how working with others can enhance learning. I also learned the value of time management and setting realistic goals.

This experience has strengthened my resolve to succeed in my chosen field of computer engineering and programming. I know there will be more challenges ahead, but I feel better equipped to handle them. I have developed a toolkit of strategies that I can rely on, and I have gained confidence in my ability to overcome obstacles.

Being a Black man in a field where diversity is still growing, I am motivated to not only succeed for myself but also to be a role model for others who may face similar challenges. I want to show that with determination, hard work, and the right support, it is possible to overcome academic hurdles and achieve one's goals.

In conclusion, the academic challenge I faced during my first semester at Ball State University was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to develop new skills and strategies. Overcoming this challenge has given me the confidence to tackle future obstacles and has reaffirmed my commitment to my studies. I am grateful for the support I received and the lessons I learned, and I am excited to continue my journey in computer engineering and programming.
