First Timer by Nay - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Nay Moo, and I am a freshman at SUNY Mohawk Valley Community College, majoring in Electrical/Electronics. As a first-time college student, I have faced several challenges, but one academic experience stands out as particularly difficult. This challenge tested my perseverance and problem-solving skills, and overcoming it taught me valuable lessons that I carry with me today.
When I first started college, I was excited but also nervous about the transition from high school. I knew that college would be different, with more demanding coursework and greater expectations. I was particularly concerned about my Introduction to Circuit Analysis class. I had always been interested in how electrical systems work, which is why I chose my major, but the complexity of the subject matter was daunting.
The first few weeks of the course were overwhelming. The lectures were fast-paced, and the concepts were more abstract than anything I had encountered before. I struggled to keep up with the material, especially when it came to understanding the mathematical models and theories that underpin circuit analysis. I spent hours reading the textbook and watching online tutorials, but I still felt lost during lectures.
The turning point came when I received my first test scores back. I had not done as well as I had hoped, and it was a wake-up call. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed in this class. I could not rely on the same study habits that had worked for me in high school. I needed to be more proactive and strategic in my learning.
First, I reached out to my professor during office hours. This was a big step for me because I had always been hesitant to ask for help. However, I found that my professor was more than willing to explain concepts that I did not understand and to provide additional resources for study. This experience taught me the importance of seeking help and using the resources available to me.
Next, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to review lecture notes, discuss difficult topics, and work on problem sets together. This collaborative approach helped me see different perspectives and understand the material more deeply. It also created a support system where we could motivate each other and share study tips.
I also began to manage my time more effectively. I created a study schedule that allocated specific times for reviewing notes, completing assignments, and preparing for exams.
