A Working Student by Nichole - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Nichole Gencarelli, and I am currently a nursing student at Keiser University in Daytona. I am excited to share a challenging academic experience I faced and how it helped shape my journey in nursing.

When I first started my nursing program, I knew it would be demanding, but I underestimated just how intense it could be. One of the most challenging courses I encountered was Anatomy and Physiology. I remember walking into the classroom on the first day, feeling both eager and anxious. The syllabus was packed with complex topics, and I quickly realized that this class would require more than just memorization—it demanded a deep understanding of the human body and how it functions.

The first few weeks were overwhelming. The sheer volume of information was daunting, and I struggled to keep up. My initial strategy of cramming before exams did not work, as I soon found out after receiving a disappointing grade on my first test. I felt discouraged and questioned whether I was cut out for this path.

Instead of letting this setback define my experience, I decided to take a different approach. I reached out to my professor for guidance, and she suggested forming a study group with classmates. This was a turning point for me. Collaborating with peers allowed me to see different perspectives and reinforced my understanding of the material. We would meet regularly to review notes, quiz each other, and discuss difficult concepts. This not only improved my grasp of the subject but also created a support system that made the journey less isolating.

In addition to the study group, I realized I needed to refine my study habits. I began breaking down the material into manageable sections, focusing on understanding the "why" behind each concept rather than just the "what." I used various resources, such as online videos and interactive models, to visualize the structures and processes we were learning about. This multi-sensory approach helped cement the information in my mind.

Time management was another crucial skill I had to develop. Balancing coursework with other responsibilities was challenging, but I learned to prioritize tasks and create a realistic schedule. By setting specific goals for each study session and sticking to them, I gradually became more efficient and less stressed.

As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my performance. My grades improved, and more importantly, I felt more confident in my abilities. This experience taught me the value of perseverance and adaptability. It showed me that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to learn and grow.

Overcoming the challenges in Anatomy and Physiology reinforced my passion for nursing. It reminded me why I chose this path—to help others and make a difference in their lives. The struggles I faced in that class were a microcosm of the challenges nurses encounter daily. It taught me resilience, critical thinking, and the importance of teamwork—skills that are essential in the nursing profession.

Looking back, I am grateful for the experience, as it prepared me for future challenges in my academic and professional journey. It also strengthened my resolve to succeed and reinforced my belief that with determination and the right support, I can overcome any obstacle.

I am excited to continue my studies and apply the lessons I have learned to my future career. As a nursing student, I am committed to not only excelling academically but also becoming a compassionate and competent nurse who can positively impact the lives of my patients.

In conclusion, the challenges I faced in my Anatomy and Physiology course were not just academic hurdles; they were opportunities for personal and professional growth. By seeking help, collaborating with others, and refining my study habits, I was able to overcome these challenges and emerge stronger. This experience has been instrumental in shaping my journey in nursing, and I am eager to continue learning and growing in this field.
