MY ESSAY by Nickolas - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Nickolas Franco, and I am currently a high school junior with big dreams of studying computer engineering or computer science at Arizona State University, University of North Dakota, or North Dakota State University. As I reflect on my academic journey so far, one challenging experience stands out, and it has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and adaptability.
During my sophomore year, I decided to take an advanced programming class. I was excited because I have always been fascinated by computers and technology. The idea of creating something from scratch using code was thrilling. However, I quickly realized that the class was far more challenging than I had anticipated. The pace was fast, and the concepts were complex. I found myself struggling to keep up with the assignments and understanding the material.
The first few weeks were particularly tough. I spent hours staring at my computer screen, trying to debug my code, only to end up frustrated and exhausted. I began to doubt my abilities and wondered if I had taken on more than I could handle. It was a humbling experience, and I knew I needed to find a way to overcome this challenge if I wanted to succeed in the field I was passionate about.
I realized that I needed to change my approach. First, I sought help from my teacher. I started attending extra help sessions and asked questions whenever I was confused. My teacher was supportive and patient, and she helped me break down the complex concepts into manageable parts. This made a big difference, as I began to understand the logic behind the code rather than just memorizing it.
Next, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also finding the class challenging. We would meet after school to work on assignments together. This collaborative environment was incredibly beneficial. We were able to share different perspectives and problem-solving strategies, and it was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles. We encouraged each other and celebrated small victories, which kept us motivated.
I also turned to online resources to supplement my learning. There are countless tutorials and forums where experienced programmers share their knowledge. I found several websites and videos that explained the topics we were covering in class in a different way, which helped reinforce my understanding. I learned that there is no one-size-fits-all method to learning, and sometimes a different explanation can make all the difference.
Another important lesson I learned was the value of persistence. There were times when I felt like giving up, but I reminded myself of my passion for technology and my goal to pursue a career in computer engineering or cybersecurity. I set small, achievable goals for myself, and each time I accomplished one, it boosted my confidence. Slowly but surely, I began to see improvement in my work.
By the end of the semester, I had not only caught up with the class but had also developed a deeper understanding of programming. The experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth. I learned how to seek help, collaborate with others, and find creative solutions to problems. Most importantly, I learned to believe in myself and my ability to overcome obstacles.
This challenging academic experience has prepared me for future endeavors in college and beyond. It has shown me that while the path to achieving my dreams may not always be smooth, I have the tools and determination to navigate any obstacles that come my way. As I look forward to attending university and pursuing a degree in computer engineering, computer science, or cybersecurity, I am confident that I will be able to tackle any challenges I encounter with the same resilience and resourcefulness that I developed during this experience.
In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge has been a defining moment in my educational journey. It has reinforced my passion for technology and has equipped me with skills that will serve me well in my future studies and career. I am grateful for the lessons I learned and the support I received from my teacher and peers. I am excited to continue learning and growing, and I am eager to see where my passion for technology will take me.
