Academic Challenges by Nora - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school career, I have faced many academic challenges, but one stands out as a defining moment that taught me the value of perseverance and adaptability. This challenge came during my junior year in an advanced business course. Balancing this demanding class with my other responsibilities was a test of my time management skills and resilience.

The course was known for its rigorous curriculum and high expectations. It was designed to simulate real-world business scenarios, requiring students to work in teams to develop comprehensive business plans. I was initially excited about the opportunity to dive deep into the world of business, which aligns with my interest in pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, and Management at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. However, I quickly realized that the workload was more intense than I had anticipated.

The first few weeks were overwhelming. The assignments were complex, and the pace was relentless. I found myself struggling to keep up with the reading, research, and group meetings. My grades started to slip, and I felt a growing sense of frustration and self-doubt. I knew I needed to find a way to overcome these challenges if I wanted to succeed in the class and maintain my GPA, which is important to me as a student with a 3.8 GPA.

Realizing that I could not tackle this alone, I decided to seek help. I reached out to my teacher, who was supportive and provided valuable advice on how to manage the workload more effectively. She suggested breaking down the tasks into smaller, manageable parts and setting specific goals for each study session. This approach helped me prioritize my tasks and focus on one thing at a time, rather than becoming overwhelmed by the big picture.

Additionally, I learned the importance of collaboration. Working in teams was a critical component of the course, and I realized that I needed to improve my communication and teamwork skills. I began to actively engage with my classmates, sharing ideas and seeking feedback. This not only helped me gain new perspectives but also built a sense of camaraderie within the group. We started to support each other, dividing tasks based on our strengths and holding each other accountable.

Another key aspect of overcoming this challenge was developing better time management skills. I started using a planner to organize my schedule, blocking out specific times for studying, group meetings, and personal commitments. This helped me stay on track and reduce the stress of last-minute cramming. I also learned to set boundaries and make time for self-care, ensuring that I was mentally and physically prepared to tackle my responsibilities.

Through perseverance and a willingness to adapt, I gradually improved my performance in the class. By the end of the semester, I not only achieved a strong grade but also gained invaluable skills that I know will serve me well in college and beyond. This experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth, and that seeking help and working collaboratively can lead to success.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me. It reinforced my passion for business and management, and solidified my decision to pursue these fields at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. I am excited about the opportunity to further develop my skills and knowledge, and to contribute to the university community.

In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge was a transformative experience that taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and collaboration. It prepared me for future challenges and reinforced my commitment to my academic and career goals. I am confident that the skills I have developed will help me succeed in college and beyond, and I am eager to take on new challenges as I continue my educational journey.
