College Readiness Should be a Required Class by Nyat - June 2025 Scholarship Essay

I was obsessed with making friends and fitting in when I graduated from 8th grade and entered high school. So, all other matters that pertain to high school were pushed aside. I never took a college readiness course and no one really spoke to me about college and what I need to do to prepare myself either. It was when I realized that college was just four years away that it hit me. I needed to get serious if I actually plan on achieving the goals I have dreamed about all my life. But unfortunately this realization doesn’t hit everyone.
Leaving high school and stepping into adulthood is a change most people aren’t really prepared for. For years we are taught what to do and what not to do by adults; hence we expect our high school teachers to at least give us the understanding of a college or a career we choose to land into. When students have a goal in mind, they get motivation, and I think college readiness classes can really assist in that. For me, my school doesn’t require us to take these type of classes; they’re more of a choice. But the thing is, teenagers are so occupied by whats happening in the moment that they don’t realize how important getting ready for college is before it’s too late, and they’re behind. The reason why I know this is because I’ve seen it happen to classmates of mind firsthand and it’s a disappointing thing to see. This is why I think college and career readiness should be something taken seriously and should become a required class rather than an optional elective.
