Growth Mindset by Nyiesha - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Nyiesha Olabiyi, and I am currently a graduate student at Emerson College, where I am majoring in Education, Health Education, Teacher Education, and Communications. Throughout my academic journey, I have faced many challenges, but one particular experience stands out as a turning point in my educational path.

During my first year in graduate school, I enrolled in a course that combined elements of both health education and communications. The course was known for its rigorous curriculum and was infamous among students for being particularly demanding. I was excited but also anxious because I knew it would push my limits. The challenge was not just about the complexity of the topics but also the requirement to integrate knowledge from different fields to create effective health education strategies.

The first few weeks were overwhelming. The course required a lot of reading, critical analysis, and synthesis of information from various sources. I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace and depth of the material. The assignments were intense, often requiring us to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, which was not something I had much experience with before. I realized that my usual study methods were not enough to tackle the demands of this course.

Feeling the pressure, I knew I had to adapt quickly if I wanted to succeed. The first step I took was to seek help. I reached out to my professor during office hours to discuss my difficulties. She was incredibly supportive and offered me guidance on how to approach the material more effectively. She suggested breaking down the readings into smaller sections and focusing on understanding the core concepts before moving on to more complex ideas.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. This was a game-changer for me. Working with others allowed me to gain different perspectives on the material and helped me to clarify my understanding. We would meet regularly to discuss the readings, share notes, and quiz each other on key concepts. This collaborative approach not only improved my comprehension but also made the learning process more enjoyable.

Another strategy I employed was to improve my time management skills. I created a detailed schedule that allocated specific times for reading, assignments, and group study sessions. This helped me to stay organized and ensured that I was making steady progress without feeling overwhelmed. I also made sure to set aside time for self-care, as I realized that maintaining a healthy balance was crucial for my overall well-being and academic success.

As the semester progressed, I started to see improvements. I became more confident in my ability to analyze and apply the material. I also noticed that my communication skills were improving, which was reflected in my presentations and written assignments. By the end of the course, I had not only achieved a high grade but had also gained valuable skills that would benefit me in my future career as an educator.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized that the challenges I faced were not just obstacles but opportunities for growth. I learned the importance of seeking help when needed, the value of collaboration, and the power of perseverance. This experience taught me that with determination and the right strategies, I could overcome any academic challenge.
