Overcoming Freshman Year by Nyssa - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a college freshman at Gordon College, I have already encountered several academic challenges, but one experience stands out as particularly formative. The transition from high school to college is often portrayed as a leap, and for me, it was a leap into a world of new responsibilities and expectations. One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my first semester, when I was juggling multiple demanding courses while trying to adjust to college life.
In high school, I maintained a solid GPA of 3.67, and I was used to a certain level of familiarity with my subjects and teachers. However, college presented a different ballgame altogether. The curriculum was more rigorous, and the pace was faster than anything I had experienced before. I was taking courses in accounting, economics, and business administration, among others, each requiring a deep understanding of complex concepts and a significant amount of independent study.
The challenge hit me hardest during midterms. I had several exams and projects due in the same week, and I quickly realized that my high school study habits were not enough. I felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work and the pressure to perform well. It was a pivotal moment where I had to decide whether to let the stress take over or to find a way to manage it effectively.
To overcome this challenge, I knew I needed to develop a new strategy. First, I reached out for help. I talked to my professors during their office hours, which was something I had not done much in high school. They were incredibly supportive, offering guidance on how to approach the material and manage my time better. This interaction also helped me understand that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.
Additionally, I connected with my peers, forming study groups where we could share notes, discuss difficult topics, and quiz each other. This collaborative learning environment was instrumental in helping me grasp complex subjects like economics and accounting. It also provided a sense of community, which made the challenges feel more manageable.
Time management became my next focus. I started using a planner to organize my tasks and set realistic goals for each day. Breaking down my workload into smaller, more manageable pieces made it less daunting. I also prioritized my tasks based on deadlines and importance, which helped me stay on top of my assignments and avoid last-minute cramming.
Furthermore, I learned the importance of balance. While academics were my priority, I realized that taking breaks and engaging in activities outside of studying were crucial for maintaining my mental health. I joined a campus club related to hospitality and tourism, which not only provided a much-needed break from studying but also allowed me to explore one of my interests in a practical setting.
Through these strategies, I was able to navigate the challenges of my first semester successfully. My grades improved, and I gained confidence in my ability to handle the demands of college academics. This experience taught me valuable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and the importance of seeking support when needed.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced, as they have shaped me into a more resourceful and determined student. I now approach my studies with a proactive mindset, always seeking ways to improve and adapt to new situations. This experience has also reinforced my passion for my chosen fields of study, particularly in business and management, as I look forward to learning and growing even more in the coming years.
