Overcoming My Early School Years by Ohanna - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my academic journey, I have faced various challenges, but one experience from my early years stands out as particularly formative. During first grade, I had a significant meltdown because I could not understand the material presented to me. This experience was intense and overwhelming, lasting well beyond school hours. I remember being left alone, crying and screaming, as even the school nurse could not concentrate with the noise I was making.
At that young age, it was difficult to comprehend why I was struggling so much. I felt isolated and frustrated, and I did not know how to express my need for help effectively. This experience could have set a negative tone for my educational journey, but it instead became a turning point that taught me important lessons about seeking support and finding ways to overcome academic challenges.
As I grew older, I learned to approach difficulties in a more constructive way. I realized that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a step toward understanding and growth. In high school, I faced another challenge in my physics class. The concepts were complex, and I initially struggled to grasp them. This time, however, I remembered my first-grade experience and decided to take a different approach.
I started by reaching out to my teacher, who was incredibly supportive and willing to offer extra help. We scheduled regular meetings where I could ask questions and work through problems at my own pace. This one-on-one time was invaluable, as it allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the material. My teacher’s encouragement and patience were crucial in helping me build confidence in my abilities.
Additionally, I formed a study group with some classmates. We would meet after school to discuss the lessons, share notes, and solve problems together. This collaborative environment made a significant difference. It was comforting to know that I was not alone in my struggles, and we all benefited from each other's strengths. Explaining concepts to my peers also reinforced my understanding and helped me retain information better.
I also took the initiative to explore online resources and educational videos. Sometimes, hearing a concept explained in a different way or seeing a visual representation made all the difference. I discovered that there are many ways to learn, and it is important to find the methods that work best for me.
Through these efforts, I not only improved my performance in physics but also developed a more positive attitude toward learning. I realized that challenges are opportunities for growth, and with the right mindset and support, they can be overcome. This experience taught me resilience and the value of persistence, which are qualities I carry with me into college.
As a rising freshman at Western Washington University and Evergreen State College, I am excited to tackle new academic challenges. My diverse background as an Asian and Hispanic trans man has given me a unique perspective, and I am eager to contribute to the campus community. I know that college will present its own set of difficulties, but I am confident in my ability to navigate them with the skills I have developed.
In conclusion, the meltdown I experienced in first grade was a pivotal moment that ultimately shaped my approach to learning. By embracing challenges, seeking support, and finding effective study strategies, I have grown into a more resilient and determined student. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story through this scholarship contest and look forward to continuing my educational journey with the lessons I have learned.
