Challenging Academic Experience by Oliver - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Oliver O'Quinn, and I am a junior at Greenbrier West High School. I am excited to share a challenging academic experience I faced and how I overcame it. This experience not only tested my resilience but also helped shape my passion for management and sports management, which I hope to pursue at West Virginia University, the University of Tennessee Knoxville, or Marshall University.
During my sophomore year, I enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics class. I have always been interested in numbers and how they can be used to make informed decisions, especially in the world of sports. However, I soon realized that AP Statistics was not just about numbers; it was about understanding complex concepts and applying them in real-world scenarios. The pace of the class was fast, and I found myself struggling to keep up with the material.
The first few weeks were overwhelming. I spent hours on homework, yet I still felt lost during class discussions. My first test results were disappointing, and I began to doubt my abilities. I worried that I had taken on more than I could handle and that this class might negatively affect my GPA, which I had worked hard to maintain at 3.8.
Despite my initial struggles, I was determined not to give up. I knew that overcoming this challenge would not only help me succeed in the class but also prepare me for the rigorous coursework I would face in college. I decided to take a proactive approach to improve my understanding of the material.
First, I reached out to my teacher for help. I scheduled regular meetings with her to go over topics I found difficult. She was incredibly supportive and provided me with additional resources, such as online tutorials and practice problems. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to ask questions and seek clarification without feeling embarrassed.
Next, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also finding the class challenging. We met twice a week to review notes, work through homework problems, and prepare for upcoming tests. Collaborating with my peers helped me see different perspectives and approaches to solving problems. It also created a sense of camaraderie, as we motivated each other to keep pushing forward.
In addition to these efforts, I took advantage of online resources. I found educational videos and forums where students from all over the world shared their insights and tips for mastering statistics. These resources were invaluable, as they allowed me to learn at my own pace and revisit topics as many times as needed.
As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my understanding of the material. My test scores gradually increased, and I began to feel more confident in my abilities.
