Overcoming the Challenge of Chemistry by Parker - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my high school journey at St. Augustine Preparatory School, I have encountered various academic challenges. However, none have tested my perseverance and dedication as much as my experience with chemistry. As a student aspiring to pursue a career in medicine or nursing, I knew that excelling in science was crucial. Yet, chemistry proved to be a formidable obstacle that I had to overcome to achieve my goals.
Chemistry was a subject that initially seemed insurmountable to me. The concepts were abstract, the equations complex, and the experiments required precision that I struggled to master. Despite my efforts, my grades did not reflect the hard work I was putting in. This was a significant blow to my confidence, especially since I had always maintained a strong GPA of 3.8. I realized that to succeed, I needed to change my approach and find a way to truly understand the material.
The first step in overcoming this challenge was acknowledging that I needed help. This was not easy, as I had always been a fairly independent learner. However, I knew that if I wanted to improve, I had to seek out resources beyond the classroom. I began attending after-school tutoring sessions offered by my chemistry teacher. These sessions allowed me to ask questions in a more relaxed environment and receive one-on-one guidance. My teacher's patience and ability to explain complex topics in simpler terms were invaluable in helping me grasp difficult concepts.
In addition to tutoring, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling with chemistry. We met regularly to review notes, solve practice problems, and prepare for upcoming tests. This collaborative learning environment was beneficial because it allowed us to learn from each other. Often, a classmate would explain a concept in a way that made more sense to me than the textbook or lectures. Through these group sessions, I learned the importance of teamwork and how diverse perspectives can enhance understanding.
Another strategy I employed was utilizing online resources. I discovered educational platforms that offered video tutorials and interactive exercises on various chemistry topics. These resources provided me with different explanations and examples that complemented what I was learning in class. I could pause, rewind, and rewatch videos as many times as needed until I felt comfortable with the material. This flexibility was crucial in allowing me to learn at my own pace.
As I began to understand the material better, I also focused on improving my study habits. I realized that cramming the night before a test was not effective for a subject like chemistry, which required a deep understanding of concepts. I started breaking down my study sessions into manageable chunks, focusing on one topic at a time. I also incorporated active learning techniques, such as teaching the material to a friend or creating flashcards, to reinforce my understanding.
Gradually, my hard work began to pay off. My test scores improved, and I gained confidence in my ability to tackle challenging problems. More importantly, I developed a genuine interest in chemistry, which deepened my passion for pursuing a career in the medical field. This experience taught me that challenges, while daunting, are opportunities for growth and learning.
Overcoming the difficulties I faced in chemistry has prepared me for future academic challenges. It has taught me the value of persistence, the importance of seeking help, and the power of collaboration. These lessons will undoubtedly serve me well as I transition to college and pursue a major in medicine or nursing.
I am excited about the prospect of attending Stockton University, Rutgers University, or Rowan University, where I can continue to build on these experiences. I am confident that the skills and resilience I have developed will enable me to thrive in a rigorous academic environment and ultimately achieve my goal of making a positive impact in the healthcare field.
In conclusion, my journey with chemistry was a challenging yet rewarding experience that has shaped my academic path and personal growth. By embracing the challenge and seeking out resources and support, I was able to overcome my initial struggles and develop a deeper understanding of the subject. This experience has reinforced my determination to pursue a career in medicine or nursing and has prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead.
