Academic Comeback ( Failure & Triumph) by Phylicia - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a junior at Piedmont University majoring in STEM, I have encountered my share of academic challenges. One experience that stands out was during my sophomore year when I took a particularly demanding course in advanced calculus. Calculus itself is a subject that requires a deep understanding of complex concepts, and this course pushed me beyond my limits. It was not just the difficulty of the material that made it challenging, but also the pace at which it was taught and the level of understanding expected from us.
At the beginning of the semester, I was optimistic and eager to dive into the subject. I have always enjoyed the logical aspects of math and how it can be used to solve real-world problems. However, as the weeks went by, I found myself struggling to keep up with the lectures and assignments. The concepts were abstract and required a level of mathematical maturity that I was still developing. My first test results were a wake-up call; I scored much lower than I had anticipated. This was a blow to my confidence and made me question my abilities in a field I was passionate about.
Realizing that I needed to change my approach, I decided to seek help. I started attending office hours regularly, which was not something I had done much before. Meeting with my professor allowed me to ask questions in a more comfortable setting and gain insights that were not always clear during lectures. My professor was patient and took the time to explain concepts in different ways until I understood them. This interaction was invaluable and taught me the importance of reaching out for help when needed.
Additionally, I joined a study group with some classmates who were also finding the course challenging. We met several times a week to go over lecture notes, work on problem sets, and prepare for exams together. This collaborative environment was incredibly beneficial. Discussing problems with peers helped me see different perspectives and approaches to solving complex equations. We supported each other, shared resources, and celebrated small victories, which made the learning process more enjoyable and less isolating.
To further reinforce my understanding, I also turned to online resources. There are countless educational videos and forums dedicated to calculus that break down difficult topics into manageable parts. These resources provided alternative explanations and examples that complemented what I was learning in class. I spent time every day reviewing these materials, which helped reinforce my understanding and build my confidence.
Balancing my time was another hurdle I had to overcome. With multiple classes and responsibilities, it was easy to feel overwhelmed. I began to organize my schedule more effectively, setting aside specific times for studying calculus while ensuring I did not neglect my other courses. This structured approach helped me manage my workload better and reduced my stress levels.
Through persistence and a willingness to adapt my strategies, I gradually improved my performance in the course. By the end of the semester, my grades had improved significantly, and I felt a sense of accomplishment for having overcome such a challenging experience. This journey taught me more than just calculus; it taught me resilience, the value of seeking help, and the power of collaboration.
This experience also reinforced my passion for STEM. It reminded me that challenges are an integral part of learning and growth. As a non-binary, Black student in a field where diversity is often lacking, I am motivated to continue pushing boundaries and overcoming obstacles. I believe that my experiences can inspire others who may face similar challenges in their academic journeys.
In conclusion, facing and overcoming the difficulties in my advanced calculus course was a pivotal moment in my academic career. It taught me important lessons about perseverance, the importance of community, and the effectiveness of diverse learning strategies. These are lessons that I carry with me as I continue my studies and prepare for a future in STEM. I am grateful for the experience, as it has made me a more resilient and resourceful student, ready to tackle whatever challenges come my way.
