Challenging Academic Experience by Presley - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school years, I have faced a variety of academic challenges, but one that stands out the most is my struggle with chemistry during my junior year. Chemistry was a subject that initially seemed like an insurmountable mountain to climb. The complex concepts, intricate formulas, and the requirement to think in ways that were unfamiliar to me made it one of the most challenging experiences I have faced in my academic journey.

When I first started the chemistry class, I was overwhelmed by the periodic table, chemical equations, and the idea of balancing reactions. It felt like learning a new language, one that I was not sure I could grasp. My grades in the first few tests were not what I had hoped for, and I felt discouraged. I began to question my ability to succeed in a subject that was foundational for my interests in nursing, biology, and medical engineering. I knew that understanding chemistry was crucial for my future studies and career aspirations, so giving up was not an option.

To overcome this challenge, I realized that I needed to change my approach to learning the subject. First, I sought help from my teacher, who was incredibly supportive and patient. I started attending after-school tutoring sessions where she explained the concepts in different ways until I understood them. Her encouragement and belief in my potential were motivating and gave me the confidence to keep trying.

Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met twice a week to go over the material together. This collaborative environment allowed us to share different perspectives and problem-solving techniques. By teaching each other, we reinforced our understanding of the subject matter. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles, and the teamwork made the learning process more enjoyable.

I also discovered online resources and educational videos that broke down complex topics into more digestible parts. These resources allowed me to learn at my own pace and revisit challenging concepts as many times as I needed. The visual and interactive nature of these tools was particularly helpful in solidifying my understanding.

As I dedicated more time and effort to mastering chemistry, I noticed gradual improvements in my comprehension and test scores. I learned the importance of perseverance and the value of seeking help when needed. This experience taught me how to adapt my learning strategies, which is a skill that will be invaluable in college and beyond.

Moreover, overcoming this challenge reinforced my passion for the sciences and my commitment to pursuing a career in the medical field. It showed me that even when faced with difficulties, I have the determination to push through and achieve my goals. Chemistry, once a daunting subject, became a stepping stone that strengthened my resolve to enter fields like nursing, biology, or medical engineering, where I can make a positive impact on people's lives.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me. It was not just about passing a class or improving my grades; it was about growing as a learner and as a person. I learned that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to develop resilience and problem-solving skills.

As I prepare to attend Sul Ross State University, I carry with me the knowledge that I can overcome academic challenges with the right mindset and support. I am excited to continue my education in a supportive environment where I can explore my interests in nursing, biology, and medical engineering. I know that the skills I gained from overcoming my struggles in chemistry will serve me well in college and in my future career.

In conclusion, my experience with chemistry taught me that with perseverance, support, and the right resources, I can overcome academic challenges. It has prepared me for the rigors of college and has strengthened my passion for learning and my commitment to my future career goals. I am confident that I can tackle any obstacles that come my way, and I am eager to continue my journey at Sul Ross State University.
