Every Point Counts by Rayvonn - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
“Every point counts.” These three simple words, spoken with so much conviction by my mentor, Ms. Carol, that I work overtime to ensure that I make the most points possible on every assignment. Ms. Carol, a case manager for a career readiness program I joined, became a guiding light during one of the darkest chapters in my life. At a time when I felt hopeless, she not only reminded me of why I was I got back in school but also inspired me to reclaim my passion for learning and my future in healthcare.
When I met Ms. Carol, my life was in shambles. I had just welcomed my third child, decided to separate from my husband, and was in a messy court battle with where I faced accusations for something I hadn’t done. The weight of all of those events left me in a state of deep depression, questioning whether I could, or even if I should continue my education.
It was during this difficult period that Ms. Carol noticed my slipping grades and called me in for a meeting. I remember sitting in her office across from her, nervously sweating as I braced myself for what I thought would be devastating news. Would they ask me to leave the program? I felt like I had failed, not just as a student but as a mother and as an individual trying to create a better life for herself.
Instead of reprimanding me, Ms. Carol extended a glimmer of hope. She asked me what was going on and how she could help. I poured my heart out to her. She didn’t dismiss what was going on, nor did she let me pity myself. She was my calm in the midst of my personal storm. Without hesitation she helped me map out a plan to address my academic challenges. She reminded me that every point, every effort, mattered no matter how small. She encouraged me to not to miss out on opportunities because of adversity instead use that as my fuel to push myself harder.
Ms. Carol’s support went beyond the classroom. She connected me with resources for childcare and counseling, ensuring I had the support system I needed to balance my responsibilities as a single mother and a student. We did weekly check-ins and she would, offer words of encouragement and celebrating even the smallest victories with me. She was my accountability partner in every sense of the word.
Her dedication to making sure I succeeded encouraged me to ensure that I was doing what needed to be done. Slowly but surely, I began to rebuild. I started to see that my education was a battle of self-preservation. It is also about me showing my children the value of resilience and determination. Ms. Carol’s mentorship became a turning point, of my academic experience.
Today, I stand stronger than ever, with a renewed commitment to my education and my future. Thanks to this motto I am on the Fall 2024 dean’s list. Ms. Carol taught me that “every point counts” is about your mindset and the action you put forth. It’s the belief that even the smallest efforts can lead to some of my most memorable moments.
Because of Ms. Carol, I am thriving. Her impact on my life is going to stick with me for the rest of my life, and I am determined to pay it forward, by helping others see the value in their own potential, just as she did for me. Students, always remember, “Every Point Counts!”
