Catch-Up by Reagan - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Balancing high-level classes while being actively involved in extracurricular activities can be quite challenging, and for me, this was particularly true during my junior year of high school. I had enrolled in several advanced placement classes, which required a significant amount of time and effort. At the same time, I was a dedicated member of the school golf team, which meant missing a day of school each week for tournaments and matches.
The most difficult part of this experience was trying to keep up with the rigorous coursework while also committing to my responsibilities as an athlete. Missing a day of school each week meant that I had to work twice as hard to stay on top of assignments, projects, and lessons. It felt like I was constantly playing catch-up, and there were times when the stress felt overwhelming.
To manage these demands, I knew I had to develop a strong sense of discipline and organization. I began by creating a detailed planner, where I would map out all my assignments, deadlines, and golf commitments. This helped me visualize my week and prioritize my tasks effectively. I learned to make the most of the time I had, whether it was studying during bus rides to tournaments or reviewing notes during breaks.
Communication was also key in overcoming this challenge. I made sure to keep my teachers informed about my schedule and any potential conflicts. They were incredibly supportive, often providing me with materials in advance or allowing me to submit assignments early. This open line of communication helped alleviate some of the pressure and ensured that I did not fall behind.
Despite the challenges, being part of the golf team was important to me. It taught me valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and time management. Golf became a way to balance the academic pressure, offering a physical and mental outlet that kept me grounded.
Through this experience, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. There were moments when I doubted my ability to juggle everything, but I pushed through by reminding myself of my goals and the reasons why I was committed to both academics and golf. I realized that challenges, no matter how daunting, could be overcome with determination and the right strategies.
In the end, I was able to maintain a strong academic performance while also contributing to my golf team. This experience taught me how to effectively balance multiple responsibilities, a skill that I know will serve me well in college and beyond. As I look forward to attending the University of Denver, I am excited to continue pursuing my passion for cinematography and writing, confident in my ability to manage the demands of college life.
